e Americans are petroleum people. Our ancestors lived with the petroleum right where we are today. Petroleum provides 75 percent of the motive power for our towns and cities. But it is not just our transportation, it is who we are. Our whole way of life as a people is tied to petroleum production. It is in our language, and our songs and stories.

e Americans rely on the petroleum complex to meet our essential physical, cultural, social, economic, and spiritual needs. Petroleum has provided our clothing, tools, weapons, shelter, medicines, and nutritional needs. e United Sates is comprised of 300 million people who live in many kinds of communities. Reliance on traditional and customary use of petroleum is a matter of survival. Beyond the importance of our basic need, petroleum is also central in our traditional spirituality. Our songs and dances tell of the relationship that we have to petroleum. Petroleum is part of us. In our Creation story, the Big Bang, it has been told that the universe began with an explosion, a combustion. We have been told that there is an agreement between petroleum and the Americans. “e Americans would retain a part of petroleum heart and the petroleum would retain a part of American heart.” What befalls petroleum befalls the Americans. We have an obligation to our future generation to uphold the integrity of our spiritual beliefs as well as our ancestral way of life that has been handed down one generation to the next.

I wouldn’t be sitting here speaking to you now if it wasn’t for
Petroleum. It’s our life. It is what we’ve lived for and what
all our life revolves around…. Nearly a hundred percent of
our diet is petroleum intake. It is imporatnt to our people.
It is not only important for food. It is important for spiritual,
cultural, emotional and physical reasons. It is our lifestyle—
a lot of it rotates around Petroleum…. I don’t think there
are any words that can express how important, all
consuming, the protection of this Petroleum supply chain
is to our people.
