Surveying Your Space

• Drawing your plan can seem quite complicated initially, however, once you understand the main principles of drafting you will become more accustomed to the skills needed to produce accurate drawings whenever necessary, or at least understand what you are looking at during meetings further down the line when you enter into industry.

• Stage 1 • Once you have your measurements on your sketched floor plan the next stage is

to transfer these onto graph paper.

• Please only use a pencil to do this as producing this with a pen will prevent you from being able to erase any errors. • For this exercise you will need: • A pencil • A 30cm ruler • A compass • An eraser

• Stage 2 • Firstly determine how many squares on your graph paper you will use, for

example • One bolder square should equal 1 Metre. One slightly less bold square will equal

0.5 metre and so on……

• Stage 3 • Now begin to draw the major elements of the space showing any doorways,

windows (in some cases you may also need to show elements such as fireplaces and stairs although we are only asking you to produce a simple plan)

• Stage 3 • Once you have the plan of the space you can then begin to draw the elevations,

i.e. essentially these are the walls where you may need to include windows.

• Stage 4 • Once you have drawn your plan you may wish to overlay a sheet a tracing paper

in order to ‘zone’ areas within the space.

• Stage 5 • Once you have zoned the various areas you can then overlay another sheet of

paper to add the fixtures.
