White Media Sketches

Create ten 9x12" sketches in your black drawing pad using white media.  Create loose, relatively quick expressions of light, shadow, and material that focus on complete compositions.  Each sketch should contain a glass object as well as some fabric.  Because these are sketches, don't worry too much about technique.  These should be more expressions, and are studies for the drawing assignment.  Be sure to compose all of your sketches in such a way that utilizes all four sides of the page.  Start with the closest object, make it big, put it on the very bottom of the page to begin.

Photographing:

Take clear photographs with good lighting and a fairly high resolution.  Use outdoor, natural lighting if you do not have good indoor lighting.  Be sure you and your shadow are not in the image, and try to position your camera directly over the center of the image to eliminate or minimize any perspective distortion.

Submission:

Submit one jpeg for each sketch.  Label your images Lastname_1.jpeg, Lastname_2.jpeg etc.  Upload each image individually instead of a zipped or compressed folder.

Assessment:

You will be assessed on Completion, Composition, and Shading, each category is weighted evenly.

Assignment 4

White Media Drawings

Criteria:

Create two 9x12" drawing from still life using white media on black paper.  The drawing should contain at least one glass object, and a little folded fabric.  You may use white charcoal, prismacolor pencil, conte crayon, or white pastel (choose only one media per drawing).  Use the white to create the highlights, and use the black paper to create the shadows.  This is not a negative, but it is a reverse approach to creating a drawing.  Make sure your still life is dramatically lit, and be sure to consume the entire page in a way that creates interesting negative space, and a convincing foreground to background relationship.  Be sure that you compose your drawing such that all four edges of the page are being occupied.  Minimize negative space.  Because it is a drawing, I want you to slow down, and refine your technique; try to eliminate your pencil strokes, and focus on creating convincing detail.

Drawings will be evaluated on craftsmanship, technique, form, shading/value, and composition.

Submission:

Submit a jpeg of each entire drawing, and one close-up detail shots of each drawing as well.  Choose areas that posses detail, or areas that exemplify your skill.  Label your images Lastname_graphite.jpeg, Lastname_detail1.jpeg etc.  Upload each image individually instead of a zipped or compressed folder.

HEIC files will not be graded.  If you're using an iPhone, be sure to change the settings to use jpg or jpeg instead of HEIC.

Submissions are due by Sunday night at 11:30 PM

You will be graded on craftsmanship, composition, technique, form, and shading.
