Cross functional teams consist of members who have different skills, and the aim is to collaborate towards achieving a common goal. The characteristics of a cross functional team are diversity and collaboration. It has people of varied levels of skills, experience, academic degrees and occupation (Stipp, Pimenta, & Jugend, 2018). It could be a combination of engineering, production, manufacturing, marketing, RMA and sales. This helps enhance the process of innovation, develop new products or improve an existing product. The teams can be long-term or short-term depending on the scope of the project (Stipp, Pimenta, & Jugend, 2018).

Working in a cross functional team is a better strategy as there is diversity in the exchange of ideas and it is a holistic approach. It helps in eliminating a narrow view of a project and missing essential elements. It is a popular approach especially in small business companies where there are two to five employees and each an expert in their own subject matter. It helps to keep the costs down while relying heavily on teamwork. One of the challenges is the reliance on collaboration. It should be a team that collaborates very closely because there is not much support outside of the group and each one is from a unique background of skill sets. One is expected to be an expert in the subject matter without the benefit of a second opinion from someone with the same or similar background.
