Starting school back up after even taking two years off can be a hard task, so Jeannine starting after twenty years is only harder. Especially with all the differences with technology and online classes. Three of the most important things to be successful in school is the presence of a support system, setting goals, and not dwelling on negative circumstances (DiVincenzo, 2014).

When Jeannine started to really down spiral because of the stress of time management, dealing with unknown technology and complications with writing papers, she wrote all her problems down. This was her first step to improving her situation by not dwelling on all the circumstances but wanting to face them on. She reached out to her guidance counselor which gave her tips on time management. Taking her second step to becoming a better student by setting a schedule by dedicating time to studying and also for when she would submit the posts or assignments.

During my undergraduate I was decent student, made time to study and be social. The biggest thing I failed at was networking with the right people not just “fun” people. I did not get involved in clubs or research or stuff that would actually assist me in creating and starting the career of my dreams.

Jeannine had taken over 20 years away from academics to work and start her family, and once she decided to come back things we are not as easy as she expected. There was, in fact, things in her way, but with the right approach, she was able to take control. The two most important things she did to help herself were creating a list, and asking for help. She first decided to create a list of problems she is currently facing and giving herself some rational solutions to them. She then began to use her resources by asking her school's academic counselor for help which in return helped her gain more confidence. She also used her daughter for help as well, by asking her to take a look at the website and guide her through it. These three things helped Jeannine dramatically, and in the end, she was prepared to face any task! As an undergraduate student, I quickly learned that work tends to pile up if it has not taken care of quickly, with this in mind I learned to create and manage a to-do list. Additionally, I also learned a ton of time management skills such as arranging certain times/days for myself to be able to focus on my school work and times/days for me to be able to relax. Additionally, research has also gone to show that the more time that’s committed to one’s studies leads to a better grade, so I also try to put in a reasonable amount of time putting in the work to get a good grade (Carver, Mukherjee, Lucio, 2017). Just like Jeannine, I also learned that whatever the obstacle that may be in the way, I to can take control of them and overcome them.

3. As a new student, after a long break from school, Jeannine had a lot of challenge to overcome in order to improve at school. She acknowledged her problems, thought of possible solution but most importantly, she reaches out for help through school counsellor, better time management, and help from her daughter to navigate through the online system.

DiVincenzo (2016) said that undergraduate study provides the basic knowledge in a more general nature and an overview of a wide variety of subjects. During my undergrad, I learned and improved my academic skills (paper writing, time management, problem-solving.) Additionally, my grant writing and internship boosted my intellectual development. Working on grant proposal and as an intern in organization such as the Philadelphia Department of Public Health (PDPH), the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC) and in the Hospital in the community health services, I have improved my communication skills, my sense of responsibility and leadership skills. These are the lessons I can take and apply to my graduate study and make this experience a positive one.
