DQ 4-2

1. I feel that both government agencies and nonprofit agencies could benefit from educating the public on safety issues and providing the public with preemptive safety resources. The public can aid in times of disaster, should disaster hit, if they are aware of how they can help. For example, citizens in a place like Florida, that is hit with hurricanes need to be made aware of how they can keep themselves, along with others safe. To do this, the local fire department, emergency manager and police department can pair with a local nonprofit organization to offer free classes, training and proper resources to help citizens prepare and also to teach citizens how they can help and when they can call for help. It is important to address this problem with a partnership because with these preemptive measures and additional education, the public will feel more prepared and will know what to do in the event of an emergency. They will be informed on what they need to avoid and how they can react quickly to save lives. This will save time and money in the long run for both government and nonprofit agencies.

Government agencies can work with the public to promote household and family emergency preparedness or provide information on topics the public is anxious about, such as pandemic flu or bioterrorism (“Working with”, n.d.). Nonprofits can step in to cover the cost of  tools or resources the public will need, such as: first aid kits, sandbags, emergency preparedness kits and more. Getting involved with the public before disaster strikes will also help government agencies and nonprofit organizations understand what the public needs from them and how they can best aid the community.

This problem needs to be addressed by both government and nonprofit agencies because by working together they can better aid the community. Government agencies and nonprofits are both working to aid society, having open communication, insight and mitigation measures before disaster strikes will help both organizations in handling a disaster after it hits. Knowing the public’s concerns and addressing these concerns together will help the community to be better prepared and in the end, will be better for everyone.

I believe that homelessness is a huge problem in society. Some people think of being homeless as just living on the street, but families that are living with other family members or friends, are also considered homeless, if their living situation is temporary. There are programs that are in place to help homeless individuals from both the government and Nonprofit organizations. The government and NPOs provide things such as shelters, section 8 housing, job training, and food banks and food donations (Watson, 2018).

The important part of the government and nonprofit working together is to have double the resources to reach more people, and one may can provide more than the other. I can’t see how one can work without the other, because they are both currently working together now and there are still several individuals without housing. Speaking for my state, Louisiana, we don’t have the funding to do much, so we depend on the NPOs to help bridge the gap. For NPOs, being that they rely a lot on volunteers and donations, it would be hard for them to function being that volunteer and donations are not guaranteed resources.
