2. The Purpose of NPOs

Hello class:

Please read the following post. How would you react?

Generally, nonprofit organizations ( NPOs ) can be described as entities established for nonprofit making purposes differing particularly from private enterprises. The government cannot do everything. NPOs fill the gap, and thus, they provide a variety of services, which may not be provided by public organizations. Often times, NPOs provide services relative to religious and charitable purposes. They also focus on the provision of education. NPOs including institutions such as GCU are required not to have the purpose of generating profit.  And yet, we need to understand a very important point. While providing services, without having the purpose of making profit, NPOs can create surplus, or generate income. However, the generated income or surplus should be reinvested to expand services. It is very important to understand that the surplus or income generated cannot be distrusted among the founders as dividend. Please note dividends or profits can be distributed among owners/shareholders/stockholders of for-profit entities or private business facilities. Please read IRS code, section 501(c)(3) A 501(c)(3). What do you think?

3. The Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is a nonprofit that serves an important role for families that have sick or injured children and families in need of medical services. RMHC provide the following services: Ronald McDonald Houses, Ronald McDonald Family rooms, Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles, and Grants (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018).

The Ronald McDonald Houses are houses that are built to provide a place for families to call their home so that they can stay close to their hospitalized child at no cost to the family (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018). The Ronald McDonald Family Rooms are rooms that are built into the hospital as a place that family of sick or injured children can go and have access to a kitchen area that includes a stove or microwave, shower facilities, sleeping rooms, laundry facilities, internet access, reference books, seating area with a television, and a quiet room while staying at the hospital (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018). According to Ronald McDonald House Charities (2018) research has shown that when the families stay close by it allows better communication with the medical team and helps aide in the completion of treatment plans. The Ronald McDonald Care Mobiles provide services in areas where there are no available services by using a 40-foot-long state of the art vehicle that includes two examination rooms, laboratory, reception area, and records area (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018). Ronald McDonald Grants have been providing funding globally over the past 25 years in the amount of over $100 million, this funding reaches and impacts the health and well-being of children worldwide (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018).

The RMHC provides the above stated services to families of sick or injured children and families that need medical care, these services are provided at no cost to the families. The government and most businesses do not provide many, if any, services for the families in need because they do not have the budget or facilities for such services. The RMHC is a very effective and efficient program that provides a much-needed service because the families would have to find other funding or options that may or may not be available to them if RMHC did not exist. RMHC is unique in the fact that they have local Chapters in over 64 countries and regions worldwide, has had over $300 million collected through donation boxes, services are provided at 90% of top children’s hospitals worldwide for children and their families, and every year they provide services for millions of children and families all over the world (Ronald McDonald House Charities, 2018).

Through donations and partnerships RMHC is able to provide a very important services of making sure that families are able to be with and stay close to their sick or injured child and those families that need medical services get the services they need. Without these provided services there would be millions of families that could not be with their child in their time in need and the important medical services would not be provided for families in areas where there are no medical services.
