The dichotomy between politics and administration is a long standing argument. There those who believe the two should be separate for various reasons. As we discussed last week, President Woodrow Wilson was an adamant believer in keeping administration separate, as this would make things run more efficiently. Wilson argued that the public administration is like a business and should therefore be run like a business and consider: cost effectiveness, efficiency, time lines and the strengthening of the government overall. He felt that political and administration questions were distinct and should be handled separately.
There are those who are very much opposed to separating the two, stating that this is virtually impossible because they are so intertwined and you cannot have one without the other. Those say that the two overlap and that even administration begins when politics ends (“Dichotomy Between, 2016). Having worked for the courts for over eleven years, I can see this. The two really do go hand-in-hand with one another but that does not mean that we shouldn't try to handle the two separately.
I agree with former President Wilson in saying that we should try to keep the two separate. Our society needs this, the people need this. They deserve great administrators who will separate themselves from the politics and focus merely on what is best for the people. Too many times we have those in charge who are too concerned with putting laws and polices into place without thinking about everyone that they are affecting and if this is right for everyone and not just a small section. But, while I agree that politics and administration should try to separate, they can only be kept separate to an extent. While the crafting of laws is political, everything that goes into putting those laws into effect is administrative, therefore the two cannot be completely separated. The study of public administration is always evolving as we continue to learn more but even President Wilson believed the dichotomy between the two is not true.

The essence of politics-administration dichotomy can be thought of as a relationship between the two. There are times that this relationship can be very productive and there are times it can create more problems rather than to solve any. I feel the reason behind this is likely due to human nature. Most politicians have their own agendas. If these politicians are allowed to influence or manipulate administration to serve their best interests, there could be consequences that affect the general public.
Woodrow Wilson provided the theory of separating government into two spheres, keeping politics an equal safe distance from administration (Stillman, 2009). This would allow for the administration aspect to function within its purest form. As history has shown us, this is very difficult to manage, as politics and administration often bleed into each other on multiple levels. We cannot have one without the other, as Wilson mentions in his essay. According to McGreggor, the primary problem is that a dichotomy presents opposing categories that usually make sense in the abstract but turn out to be far less helpful for navigating the twists and turns of practical governing (2015, p. 227). He attributes the expansion and reduction of bureaucracy has less to do with the way administrators carry out their duties than with administration’s being assigned the role of symbol for a certain social order in a broader conflict about the appropriateness of that order (McGreggor, 2015, p. 240).
Why does this happen and how do we make sure they are kept separate as Wilson suggest? I feel like the answer is easier said than done. If every decision or choice is made with the idea that it is best for the public interest, than there shouldn’t be any problems. As a student in public administration, I think I have much to learn. There is always going to be a few individuals who don’t play nice in the sand box, just take a look at what our congress is doing today for example. That being said, I feel we should make every attempt to keep the two separate as President Wilson mentions, however I understand that there will be some level interference. As the role of administrators, it’s important to remain neutral free from connection of social order or political influence.
