Practitioners must have a basic understanding of the collaborative team’s scope of practice and role because each health care professional serves a specific role on the team and since this is an interpersonal team, understanding everyone’s role leads to the best care possible for a patient. Not understanding the roles clearly can lead to miscommunication which can lead to a variety of problems such as misdiagnosing a patient or prescribing a patient the incorrect medication. Some communication barriers include perceptions of different professions, busy schedules, staff shortages, and sex disparity (Flicek, 2012).

Practitioners need to have a basic understanding of collaborative team scopes and practice. Every team member will have different rolls because not every practitioner will not have the same scope. Understanding that there will be different task going on will allow care to be provided to patients. The communication skills practitioners need to have is listening skills, exuding positive body language, and speaking professionally. In regards to communicating to create a team I would adapt my communication skills by allowing every team member the opportunity to add their intake and listening to their ideas. According to McCaffrey, Hayes et al. (2016), “providing the best patient care possible must begin with clear and appropriate communication, and without communication true collaboration among professionals is impossible” (p.172).

The Institute for Healthcare Communication states, “Research evidence indicates that there are strong positive relationships between a healthcare team member’s communication skills and a patient’s capacity to follow through with medical recommendations, self-manage a chronic medical condition, and adopt preventive health behaviors” (IHC, 2011). It is essential for a healthcare provider to have basic understanding of the collaborative team’s scope of practice and role in order to deliver cost-effective quality care because effective communication and less medical errors will help the practice. When the practitioner is aware of the staff scope, the message will be direct appropriately and there will be less time waste and miscommunication. Building a team who communicates will help everyone be on the same page with patients and there will be no confusion on what is going on. Many times where there is bad communication it is reflected to the patients and the patient’s notices and it’s not good. Patients lose trust.
I believe that for a team to be effective there has to be good communication among everyone. Having meetings is very helpful to bring the team together and discuss concerns, conflicts or suggestions to provide better care. An effective meeting will be when there is results about what has been discuss and everyone agrees to the new changes or suggestions.

4. “Health care providers share a common goal: providing high quality care to their patients. Measuring performance can help you understand how well your organization is accomplishing this goal. It allows for an analysis of where and what changes need to be made in order to improve performance and the quality of care provided. Measuring performance also allows providers to understand what is working well; information that can be shared with other providers who can learn from their success” (HRSA, 2017).
When communicating to accomplish team building, it is imperative for all staff members to know their worth, know the worth of others, and to see the value in the team as a whole. In order to be more effective in achieving my desired outcome, I would be very direct, clear and concise with my goals and the goals of the health care team. By doing this, I would hope to foster a sense of partnership within our department. It is important for every individual to know exactly what they bring to the table, and for them to understand all members of the health care are necessary and equally important.

In most healthcare settings, there are many health care professionals, specializing in different areas of medicine, who share the same patients. They must work as a collaborative team to ensure that their patients receive quality health care. Not only do these health care professionals have to work together to care for their patients, they must do so within their scope of practice.
In the link below, there is an article titled “Responsibility and Collaboration in Health Team Care”. The author of the article, an ICU nurse, shares a story of her experience with working within the scope of practice. This ICU nurse delegated a blood draw to a patient care assistant, with the belief that she would perform the normal venipuncture to obtain the blood. Shortly after, she entered the patient’s room and discovered that the assistant decided to stop an infusion to draw blood from the patient’s central line. Not only this, she was preparing to flush the line! The assistant understood accessing a patient’s central line was outside of her scope of practice, yet she attempted to do so, to the dismay of the ICU nurse. The ICU nurse trusted her to perform a routine task and she deliberately cross that professional boundary. “A violation of trust may, at best, undermine otherwise effective practice patterns, and, at worst, threaten a patient’s life (Dineen, 2009).
Each health care professional serves a specific role on the health care team and each team member need to understand their responsibilities and the responsibilities of the other team members to ensure that everyone is adhering to their practice parameters. Communication is a must in healthcare; it is vital that everyone is on the same page and have a clear understanding of the needs and treatment protocol of their patients they are caring for. Keeping an open line of communication can help to minimize or eliminate any conflicts or unethical practices that may arise among healthcare professional.
