week 2 DQ 2
D Q 2 reponse 1
As an Oncology bedside nurse working in a hospital setting, there are several things I can do to encourage collaboration and demonstrate stewardship. One of my roles, is as a member of my organizations shared governance group. I have the responsibility in this role to participate in meetings, disseminate information to colleagues, listen to their feedback and bring this back to group to share in the decisional making process. Another one of my roles is actively engaging in quality improvement projects that impact patient care. Robichiaud et al. (2011), posed that participating in a quality improvement project can be an excellent vehicle to promote interprofessional collaboration. One of the most recent quality initiatives I had the opportunity to develop and continue to work on is our “quiet environment” initiative with several members of the interdisciplinary health care team. I can lead by example and role model behaviors that others will want to follow. This simply meaning as a member of the health care team, I can also foster a culture of respect and not speak negatively of another health care team members role or engage in gossip that occurs within an organization. This is especially important as we are a teaching hospital new generational nurses, physical therapist, occupational therapists etc.

An example of collaboration that is done on our unit is the hiring process. I am always asked to sit on the hiring committee and on this committee it only consists of nurses. During the interview process we encourage feedback from the potential hire and then after the interview we collaborate on what we think about the individual and if they are a right fit for our unit. Our unit is the biggest Intensive Care unit in our facility and it is not a job for everyone. In addition, in our hospital we have a perk called clinical latter and it enables nurses to make a percentage more on top pf your base rate. This standard says that as a clinical latter nurse you go above and beyond what is required of you in addition to performing educations, community teachings, and coming up with ways to better our practice. During the education sessions, the clinical latter nurse has a brief information session on a new process or technique for practice. The nurses are encouraged to ask questions and receive feedback on the topic at hand. The clinical latter nurse gets rewarded with more money each paycheck as well as being a steward for the unit they practice.

“Research suggests that interprofessional teamwork and collaboration improve patient outcomes and access to health care. In addition, those health care workers who serve as part of a team are more effective and have higher job satisfaction than those who do not” (Catherine, et al., 2015). As a nurse it is imperative to be an active member of the team and provide input and expertise in relation to patient care. All members of the team should come together and discuss all scenarios and possibilities in order to obtain the best outcome possible for the patient. “Collaboration requires two constant and key elements, namely, (1) construction of collective action that addresses the complexity of client needs and (2) the construction of a team life that integrates the perspectives of each professional where each member experiences respect and trust” (Catherine, et al., 2015).
In order to encourage collaboration I must first set an example of being an active participant in the decision-making and the planning of care for patients. Setting an example and encouraging others discussion and input will assist with forming a team of workers who effectively collaborate and respect one another. By volunteering and leading committees and advocating for patients and other employees I will demonstrate stewardship. This stewardship will help build trust and in turn increase employee collaboration and facility success with optimal outcomes.

Every member of the health care team should be practicing this type of care but the reality is that they just aren’t. There are many studies that indicate benefits of collaboration. These studies have shown improved patient outcomes, reduced length of stay, cost savings, increased staff satisfaction and retention and improved teamwork (Gardner, 2005). Individuals go into nursing because they have a passion to help others. The focus of nurses duties need to be realigned to that part of the job as a source of inspiration. If given information and reminders of the benefits of collaboration, the health care field would likely see more use of that approach. Those in leadership positions need to be the pioneers of this movement. If floor staff see a leader working collaboratively, see the positive outcome of the behavior, they are likely going to mimic the behavior. Once more members of the staff get on board with the collaborative model, the culture of organization will begin to transform. Collaboration will become the new norm. By making the adjustment toward collaborative care, we are also demonstrating our stewardship as this transition could be uncomfortable at first for us but beneficial to the patient. The comfort of the staff needs to be set aside and the interest of the patient needs to be the focus. In putting our own wants and needs to the side, encouraging others to join in on the collaborative bandwagon all while focusing on an improved outcome for the patient, we can then consider ourselves stewards of health care.
