Running head: ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS 1
ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS 2
Ethical Considerations Responses
1.
Ethics are fundamental and paramount qualities that any effective leader needs have. Flipping on the evening news will almost always provide some example of poor ethics in some corner of the world. I learned from the assessment that I am currently working with the right goals and ethics in mind. IF we take care the staff, the staff in turn will be much better equipped to take care of the leadership in return. While we all know that it happens every day, employment should not be a source of victimization for an employee.
There is almost always a question about ethics during any interview process within my current organization. I am frequently surprised by how many people struggle to even define ethics and their importance. For me personally, ethics is doing the right thing when no one is watching. It does not matter what the situation, we all know what the right thing to do is, the question is, and will we all do it. The real struggle is that it is very hard to test for such qualities and interviews are just lip service. We will only know what our real proclivities are when we are really challenged. Those real challenges may only present themselves to us once a year or less, but those are the times when we will all be judged on what we will “really” do. Those are the times that respect is earned and trust is embedded in the working relationships around us.

Please define/describe ethics.
3.
After taking the self-assessment from chapter 1, I learned what powers I tend to utilize most at my organization. As mentioned in the previous DQ post, I scored primarily in the referent and legitimate sector. I agree with the assessment, as I visualize myself leading through positive influence and experience. According to Johnson, “referent power magnifies the impact of other power sources because these other influence attempts are coming from a ‘respected’ person (2013, p. 38).” I agree with this statement because I feel all types of power intertwine with each other and they all play an important part in the leadership role.
In terms of ethical considerations related to public administrators, I feel that everything we have learned up until this point still applies in both political and public service roles. We recall having transparency with our constituents, this is so important for leaders to embrace. By having transparency with staff, we are showing them that we have trust and faith in them. We are showing them that they are important, and we value their input. Ethical standards of truth and honesty are crucial in public administration roles because those roles are not for the selfish. They are roles established to serve the greater good and should be treated as such. I feel that the individual in these types of roles will demonstrate effective leadership by remaining true to their moral and ethical standards. By remaining true to their beliefs and values, only then will the concepts of power (referent, legitimate, reward, etc.) shine through.
