DQ 2-2 Responses

1. The most significant person in the field of public administration, in my opinion, is former president Woodrow Wilson. Mr. Wilson firmly believed that public administration should be its own field of study and should be studies by politicians and students alike. With the everchanging field of politics, Wilson emphasized professional training and study of the science of administration (“The early” 2018). Mr. Wilson believed that public administration should be carried out as a separate role in the government and he led the arguments that brought about change. He believed that public administration is a field of business and should be run with the same style and approach, as this will help the government run at the highest possible level. Mr. Wilson also believed that civil servants and administrators should not be politically influenced but focused on the execution of government policies and the best interest of the people (“The early” 2018). At the time, this was a new way of thinking. He led the way and helped those around him realieze the importance of public administration and how it could benefit the overall function and flow of the government.

Retrieved from https://onlinempadegree.usfca.edu/news-resources/news/the-early-history-of-public-administration-in-the-united-states-woodrow-wilson/After completing the assigned reading, I choose our former president Woodrow Wilson as the most significant individual in the development of public administration. Stillman II (2010) states that outlining public administration, such as it’s boundaries, scope, and purpose has been challenging to say the least for public administration theorists. This is as true today as it was back in 1887 and will continue to be challenging in the future. Wilson has been given credit as the founder of public administration for the 1887 writing of his essay on public administration, the first of its kind in the United States. Since Wilson was the first to address public administration, he set the foundation on which public administration has been built on and will continue to be built upon. (Stillman II, 2010) Many changes have been made through the years since 1887 but as Stillman II (2010) mentions, all the issues that Wilson raised in his 1887 writing are still relevant and important to take into consideration today. Woodrow Wilson was affective in public administration by being the first to try and define its purpose and responsibilities, this began the public administration evolution.

One of the most significant people contributors to the history of public administration is the founder of the subject Woodrow Wilson. Prior to Wilsons phenomenal introduction of the subject of public administration government operated, but not as efficiently as it could. Wilson realized that governmental duties were increasing as technological innovations were becoming more and more prevalent in society. The need for governmental intervention was becoming more of a necessity to keep society running in a productive manner. Wilson highlighted the need for public administration to be considered its own field of study; as a result government would be able to run more efficiently at less costly. (Stillman, 2010). Wilson discovered that to serve the people in the best possible manner, government officials need to delegate responsibilities accordingly to ensure the quality of needs are met for citizens in society. This shaped the public administration for the future, because it helped future leaders on implementation of policy and making mandates to policy more realistic and effective for citizens of society. People in the field of  public administration now the purpose of the field and how and why it is essential for governments to run accordingly. It is from these roots that we have grown a political, governmental machine that can produce for society and provide success in policy and governmental operations.
