Re:Topic 1 DQ 1

Strong leaders must tailor their application of power, influence, advocacy, and authenticity to the situation at hand.  Different organizations may require different balance of each.  For example, leadership in a military setting may be far different than that of a hospital setting. “Leaders and individuals within these organizations often adapt these models by building in aspects that reflect their personal values and previous experience” (Grand Canyon University).   Leader is granted a certain level of power.  They can use power to enforce rules and policies over their subordinates.  The power can result in granting rewards or punishment.  The use of such power can influence the subordinates’ opinions of the leader.  The power must be used in a manner to command respect from employees and gain trust in the leader.  “The leader must understand that by leading a team he is serving the team” ( Morale and discipline: The mind of a leader, 2011).  The leader must advocate for the team members.  The leader must support the team and give the proper tools for the team to be successful.  In addition, authenticity must be used by the leader.  For example, it is good for the leader to be authentic and look to the team for answers and advice as to how to complete the mission.  Authenticity is important to gain respect of the team.  Authenticity builds trust and when team members trust a leader, they strive to support the mission and the leader.

As a nurse leader you are an example to others either positive or negative. It may be necessary for you to adopt characteristics from a variety of leadership styles as power, influence, advocacy and authenticity based on the situation at hand. Regardless of the leadership activity needed, it is important to act with integrity, to set realistic goals, to communicate clearly and often, to encourage others, to recognize the successes of your team members, and to inspire them to provide the best of care. Ultimately your actions will be reflected by your staff in the care they give to your residents each day regardless of which style you practice.

This video shows leadership characteristics that motivate others and can make changes in this world. Having a strong leader in any act of work is extremely important, whether it be the leader of a country, a large business, or even a small department. People with a leader who is inspirational and has the necessary skills can do much good. Studies show that people who have a sense of purpose are more focused, creative, and resilient, so leaders should make a point of reminding employees how their work is improving people’s lives (Seppala, 2016). Strong leaders apply power, influence, advocacy, and authenticity to motivate those they lead by encouragement, trust, and good communication skills.

Nursing leadership is extremely crucial in this career field. Their positions can help run a department that saves lives and have many beneficial impacts on our society. Nursing leadership professionals must be able to develop a successful vision for the nursing organization and nurture collaborative relationships among interdepartmental staff and management in an effort to implement that vision (Nurse Administrator (Leader), 2017). Strong leaders are motivational and inspire others around them.

Good strong leaders get to know and build a rapport with his or her employees. Based off the video, good leaders build their employees up rather than berate or break them down. An example from personal experience our organization recently received a new CEO and his message to the employees was his plan to get to know the people and take a step back and see how the organization currently functions and then he will add some implementations. The new CEO was also seen serving food for our Disaster team A when Hurricane Irma struck. Guestures like serving the people whom you govern is very poignant and humbling to see. Other examples are good leaders enlisting the team members in decision making processes. It makes the employees feel as though they are valued and hold a stake in the company. For example, in my unit the nurses hold the interviews for staff and the nurse manager makes the final decision. Ultimately, it is the nurses who choose which employees get to be part of the team. According to video, it showed that being more inviting opposed to dictatorship like leadership is more beneficial to a more unified and rewarding company culture.

According to the video "Morale and Discipline: The Mind of a Leader", leading is less about the knowledge the leader possesses, and more about leveraging the diversity of the team while staying abreast of one’s own humility (Morale and discipline: The mind of a leader 2, 2011). A strong leader is able to remain transparent and use their charisma to influence and create trust with their employees, which leads to increased engagement. Increased engagement in turn, will build a more productive team. Power is utilized by strong leaders to build confidence and strength within employees, and not merely for personal gain up the corporate ladder. The authentic leader advocates for their team when necessary, and takes a stand when it may be less than favorable. The leaders in the video suggest that strong leaders build effective teams through motivation, transparency, and defined expectations (Morale and discipline: The mind of a leader 2, 2011).
