Sleep is something that affects every person but most people are confused about sleep medicine as a field.  The RPSGT (registered polysomnographic technologist) or RST (registered sleep tech) are the certifications earned as a sleep tech. "Sleep technologists are allied health professionals who work as part of a team under the general supervision of a licensed physician to assist in the education, evaluation, treatment and follow-up of sleep disorders patients of all ages." (Sleep Technologist Scope of Practice, 2017) The sleep tech has many responsiblities beyond the performing the polysomnogram, assessing daytime sleepiness, initiating cpap or other pap therapies (positive airway pressure), and continued support in areas such as mask fitting.  Sleep is a field that will continue to grow, the advances in medicine are helping people live longer and survive illness.  The premie and aging population are just two groups that benefit from help with either learning how to fall and stay asleep or treatment for sleep disordered breathing as a result of other medical issues.

There are 2 main organizations for the sleep tech, the AAST and the BRPT. The AAST is the American Association of Sleep Technologists and the BRPT is the Board of Registered Polysomnography Techs.  The BRPT is the certification board for techs, we are responsible to get 50 continuing education credits every 5 years as an RPSGT.  The AAST originally was developed to provide standards, education and training for sleep techs and continues to keep us up to date on any new advances and technologies.

Sleep continues to grow as it is becoming more recognized by general practitioners as an important part of staying healthy and recovering from illness or injury.  Organizations like the BRPT and AAST keep sleep techs up to date on the latest education and technologies so that we are better able to do our job.  One of the ways for the sleep field to expand is through education not only for health care providers but the general population, this includes teachers and parents.  Lack of sleep can affect every part of our lives, school, work or our health.  I am still amazed by how many people are surprised by what I do, they don't understand how difficult sleep can be for some or how negatively poor sleep can be on our entire body.

The health care profession I choose is a Medical Assistant. Medical assistants work along side physicians, mainly in outpatient or ambulatory care facilities, such as medical offices and clinics. “Medical assisting is one of the nations careers growing much faster than average for all occupations, according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, attributing job growth to the following: predicted surge in the number of physicians offices and outpatient care facilities, technological advancements, and growing number of elderly Americans who need medical treatment” (American Association of Medical Assistants, 2017).  In my opinion, this profession does not get enough credit for what they do on a daily basis. They are often cross-trained to perform both administrative and clinical duties. Some examples of both include:

Administrative Duties:

-       Using computer applications

-       Greeting patients

-       Updating and filing patient medical records

-       Coding and filling out insurance forms

-       Scheduling appointments

-       Arranging hospital admissions and laboratory services

-       Billing and bookkeeping

Clinical Duties:

-       Taking medical histories

-       Explaining treatment procedures to patients

-       Preparing patients for examinations

-       Assisting physicians during exams/ some procedures

-       Laboratory testing

-       Instructing patients about medications and diets

-       Drawing blood

-       Taking electrocardiograms

-       Removing sutures and changing dressings

I think that this profession could improve in some ways when it comes to procedures with medications. In my opinion, nurses or the physician for safety reasons should always administer medication refills. I think that this profession is continuing to grow with the high demand of medical professionals that are needed. They may even gain more responsibilities to help the nurses and physicians keep up with the patients.

Physical Therapist is one of the allied health care professions, which are currently in high demand in healthcare field. Main function of this profession is to restore mobility, relive pain with the help of therapy, reduce risk of falls, deliver range of motion, reduce the need of surgery etc. Physical therapist can practice independently or in a hospital, skilled or home-health care sector (APTA, 2016). There are some organizations that supports the need for this profession such as American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapist (AAOMPT) etc. help to promote the necessity for physical therapy and provides recommendations and guidelines according to the state regulations. Even though, physical therapy is recommend for all ages and disease related condition such as in the case of fracture, falls etc., But, it seems to be expanded in population with some kind of chronic disease or conditions that requires the use of opioids. According to CDC, 1 in 4 Americans suffered from some kind of chronic pain that leads to use of opioids for pain relief and later suffers from opioids disorders. CDC recommends physical therapy as one of the nonpharmacologic therapy to avoid the addiction and use of opioids (CDC, n.d.)
