ASSIGNMENT 2.3: STORY OUTLINE + SCRIPT DRAFT
Begin by writing a 3-5 sentence description of your film concept.
ALEX is a student at a college, who is always sleep deprived, opens his eyes to the alarm, and now must make an important choice: to get up or to press the snooze button. This snap choice divides the movie into two parallel stories, which are dramatically different in terms of outcomes of one, simple, decision. In the original timeline, Alex has an advantage on his day and there is an effective meeting and a small win in the lottery. The second timeline is full of missed opportunities and is in a hurry, which leads to a bad presentation and a missed opportunity that could make or break a day, and thus depicts how the little decisions add up to create an image of what one in a day succeeded in doing or failed to do.

SCENE 1: INT. ALEX’S DORM ROOM – DAWN There is a fixed shot of a phone broken screen with 6:00 AM on it. The alarm is blaring.
CLOSE up of an exhausted hand reaching and striking the phone.
The hand withdraws back beneath the covers. The screen then lights up again displaying the snooze time left. |
A loud and electronic ALARM CLOCK bell that cuts off abruptly.
A groan (sound effect) of a muffled pillow. |
|
SCENE 2A: TIMELINE A (GETS UP) ALEX (at early 20s) throws the covers aside decisively and also stretched himself. The room is dimly lit.
ALEX (Voice-Over).
We see Alex hastily and effectively dressed up and already looking better than the one in Timeline B. |
Rustling of the papers and this gratifying and silent YAWN.
"Choice A: The early start."
Light rock or electronic (e.g. upbeat, motivational) MUSIC is started. |
|
SCENE 2B: TIMELINE B (SNOOZE) The clock now shows 6:09 AM. The snooze button is again hit frantically by the hand of Alex.
ALEX (Voice-Over).
Alex is portrayed sleeping peacefully with a tincture of stress on his face. |
The dampened alarm is resumed, and then is interrupted by a great THUD of a hand.
"Choice B: No more than ten more minutes."
Slow, smoky MUSIC commences (e.g. ambient synth pad). |
|
SCENE 3A: TIMELINE A (PRODUCTIVE) INT. COFFEE SHOP - MORNING. Alex is sitting on a table and he is going through his notes on his laptop in a composed manner. The shop is relatively empty.
He peeps up and sees a lottery ticket lying on the table beside him discarded. |
Bossa Nova Music playing softly in the background.
SOUND EFFECT: A coffee grinder whirring in the distance. |
|
SCENE 3B: TIMELINE B (LATE/RUSHED) INT. ALEX’S DORM ROOM - LATE MORNING. The clock now shows 8:45 AM. The alarm is blaring again.
Alex leaps out of bed and stumbles in a heap of laundry. WIDE SHOT of the untidy room.
ALEX |
A sudden, panicked ALARM BUZZ.
SOUND EFFECT: A rough, disjointed THUMP as he collapses.
(Frantic, half-shouting) No no no! I’m going to be late!" |
