I have been in St. Michaels, Maryland for not even a year. I work for master Thomas Auld. Today, on the morning of May 4th, I had the most brilliant idea: I was going to teach others how to read. I have been thinking about this for some time now. I truly believe that everyone deserves the chance to enjoy the beautiful art that is literature. Throughout my day of work, I went around the plantations as I usually did every day. I asked everyone that I saw if they would like to go into the shed where we slept at night and learn how to read. Many people seemed frightened and concerned when I mentioned this, but truly, I was also scared to commit fully. I knew the consequences of teaching slaves how to read was awfully inhumane.
Journal entry day #2: Douglas teaching the slaves how to read ●
May/5/1833 At this time, I had heard the chatter of people talking about the lessons I was providing. The turnout was absolutely incredible. I had never so many people to come. About 10 people showed up. It was cramped in the little shed, in the back, where we were all forced to sleep in. The beds were made of wooden slabs thrown together. Hay was thrown on top to lessen the discomfort of the wood on our already aching bodies. Once the sun was well set the lessons commenced. I started off with the alphabet. They comprehended it quite quickly and learned it perfectly in that one session. Journal entry day #3: He is caught ●
May/6/1833 After the long day of continuous excruciating agony, mostly everyone stayed up to continue learning. The alphabet was perfectly memorized, it came as natural as breathing. I had now moved on and started to use the Bible to teach. Everyone should be known to the word of the Lord. The New Testament is the portion I used from the sacred scripture. What came next was absolutely frightening, the door was slammed open a strong gust of wind blew in. The shadowy figure became clear in the dim light that was created by the small fire we had produced to brighten the room up. The anger was clear as he looked around the room and made different facial expressions. He commanded us to extinguish and go to bed immediately or we would get a whipped in the morning. We followed instructions and from that moment on I could no longer teach.
