College Students Mental Health: essay # 3

College Students all over suffer from mental illness, but the number of students affected

by these disorders has dramatically took a turn for the worst. In the scholarly article ‘stigma and

help among college students’ is a study that analyzed the personal well-being of college students,

in the non-scholarly article ‘when mental ill students feel alone’ the author touches base on a the

stress universities cause in its students. The overall view on mental health help seeking is often

put to the side because of the judgement that comes along with finding help. The articles give the

audience a chance to recognize the impact colleges have on students when referring to mental

health issues.

Yale university has a school policy which allows the school to refuse readmission to

students if request for a leave due to students bettering mental health. The non-scholarly article

touches base on this policy and brings attention to the college failure to sympathize theses

students. Pathos is the rhetorical device used to write this essay, the author mentions a suicide

note which causes the tone of the article to try and rasp the emotions of the readers. Students

failure to reach out for help in mental illness is not anything other than expected. These students

are forced to believe that if coming forward about mental health then they will be in danger of

being kicked from the university.

Instead of the colleges putting an intense pressure on students to be healthy mentally,

they should promote the process of getting better. Not only should the colleges get rid of the

readmission policy they have, but they should offer classes to inform students on mental health.

This would result in a constructive atmosphere, due to the students' knowledge on mental health

they see the ways to prevent the illness’ before indulging in the-disorders. The knowledge may

result in a change in attitude towards the issues, but without the proper support systems their

mental state may stay consistent. The schools need to invest in a friendlier group of student-

based support groups, to show open arms towards struggling students.
