To be persuasive, you have to have a goal in mind for your audience. What do you want them to do or believe as a result of having heard your speech? The objective of having them "know" or "understand" something, makes it informative instead of persuasive. Will they change a health behavior? Seek more knowledge? Make an effort to educate themselves on diversity issues?

Read chapters 9 and 10 in the textbook.  This assignment will include the observation of a small group (approximately 7-15 members) and the creation of a PowerPoint presentation (with notes pages) with elaboration on the concepts listed below with regard to the observation.  The group can be one that the student is a member of or one that the student specifically seeks out for this assignment.  The presentation will include at least 10 slides and the observation will include at least 2 hours with the group.  

 A description of the group (using the concepts from the textbook)

1. The goals of the group - not the members, the group.

2. The roles each member plays - see the group roles in the textbook

3. A description of group leadership - see the textbook discussion on leadership

4. The types of power exerted by group members - see the textbook discussion on types of power

The purpose of this speech will be to persuade.  The specific purpose will be determined by your topic.  (Persuade the audience to.......)

The opening statement should be your "attention-getter", it is designed to make the audience pay attention and want to hear your speech.

The introduction should provide a preview of your speech and arguments.

Your thesis statement is the "gist" of your argument.

Each major point should be supported by 3 piece of evidence.

The conclusion should include a review of your arguments.

Your closing statement should be a powerful reminder of why the audience should be persuaded by your speech.
