Sexual Discrimination

Yi Liu

Joseph Goldstein’s article is based on sexual discrimination people face in their daily lives at job places as well as in any gathering. The issue at stake in the article is the gay rights in employment. Contrary to Obama administration that regarded Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender to be treated fairly and equally by their state laws, Trump administration maintained that federal laws do not protect gay employees. This has brought a lot of debate that Goldstein captures in his article. Donald Zarda, an instructor of Long Island skydiving, is the person facing employment discrimination in the article for having confessed to his student that he is 100% gay.

I get interested in the issue because I feel it’s unfair to discriminate someone just because of his or her sexual orientation yet the law is very clear about the rights of people with different sexual orientations. Interestingly, the 13 bench judges appointed to hear Goldstein’s case differ in interpreting the federal discrimination law that protects the gay rights. Mr Goldstein was fired in 2010 and died in 2014 without getting justice. This shows how serious the case is and therefore should interest people from various fields such as human rights careers as well as families because it may adversely impact on future generation with different sexual orientation. People need to join hands to fight for the LGBT rights.

Sexual discrimination adversely impacts on the society since the individuals who undergo such discrimination are psychologically affected which leads to poor physical and mental health. When one loses his job, he becomes depressed because there is no other way of earning his living. Gay people also feel fearful, anxious and stigmatized and cannot interact freely in the society because of rejection. When gay discrimination becomes the order in the society, no employer will be willing to employ LGBT. This means that the future job prospects of gay people are limited unless they engage in self-employment opportunities.
