Corporate T&D Best Practices Activity
STEP 1: Research and examine what you can find on companies regarding their training practices. Search widely as you may not necessarily find enough information just from the company’s website. Also, consult popular press and trade publications (i.e., newspaper articles, T&D trade publications).
Some possible companies to consider exploring include (an extensive but certainly not exhaustive list):

Harley Davidson McDonalds General Mills
Southwest Airlines Coca-Cola Toyota
Four Seasons Cheesecake Factory Starbucks
Wal-Mart Chick-Fil-A General Motors

STEP 2: Identify three best practices that are related to training and development specifically (not simply best practices of the organization like being environmentally friendly).
One each from three different companies, not three from the same company.
STEP 3: Complete the activity worksheet below, using as much space as necessary. Be as precise and detailed as possible with your responses.
BEST PRACTICE #1:
1. In a single paragraph specifically describe the best practice below.
Apple has a training program that is provided to all employees to show the vision of the company and how it wants to be presented to the world. They give a very organized presentation of what is most important to the company and why. They have some of the most highly educated instructors to train their employees.
2. With what type or types of training does this practice most closely align? (e.g.,
lecture, simulation, role play, etc.)
This time of training is lecturing. It is basically in class style to help workers get the fundamental goals and visions down of the company.

BEST PRACTICE #2:
1. In a single paragraph specifically describe the best practice below.
Southwest spends a full day with trainees sharing the company history, employees expectations, benefits and diversity. They demonstrate the key components of a Southwest employee and what an average day with high expectations should look like. As the training program continues (also known as Airtran) employees and new hires attend a FLY as a way to introduce Southwest’s culture and customer service.
2. With what type or types of training does this practice most closely align? (e.g.,
lecture, simulation, role play, etc.)
This type of training style is both lecture and role play. They give hands on experience with trainees by taking them on a flight to experience the the culture themselves.

BEST PRACTICE #3:

Harley Davidsons training program first gives new employees a formal orientation. They give the freedom to make the decision they feel necessary, and take risks in their measured work. At the end of each year, they have a performance-management and success-planning process that brings senior leaders and managers together to discuss all employee performance.
2. With what type or types of training does this practice most closely align? (e.g.,
lecture, simulation, role play, etc.)
Harley Davidson first uses lecture for all employee, as well as a form of role play considering the roles of the top leaders and managers.
