5.3 Assignment: Business Simulation Final Report to CEO
Abstract Set in Cincinnati, Ohio, At Work On Purpose
(AWOP) is one of the largest and most successful
citywide marketplace ministries in the U.S. With
global connections and an emphasis on serving
working Christians, the local church, and ministry
networks, At Work On Purpose seeks to revitalize
a 21st century expression of the 1st century
Church by mobilizing the work world for Christ.
Key Findings By its nature, the structure of AWOP is likened
more to an organism than an organization.
The marketplace ministry intentionally applies
a holistic social development strategy based
upon two early Church concepts: Ekklesia and
Conventus Civium “Christus,” when seeking to
mobilize Christians in the work world for Christ.
At Work On Purpose identifies with all four of
Miller’s (2007) “manifestations or ways people
integrate faith and work” (as cited in Miller &
Ewest, 2010, p. 53), identified as the Four E’s:
Ethics Type—places high value on attention to
ethical concerns
Expression Type—places high value on the ability
to express their faith tradition and worldview to
others
Experience Type—places high value on how they
experience their work; often understanding [work]
as spiritual calling
Enrichment Type—places high value on drawing
strength and comfort from spiritual and/or
consciousness practices (p. 54) 4

Threefold Purpose
Identify the strategic emphasis for marketplace
ministry at AWOP.
Describe the wide range of support services
AWOP provides to Christians, the local church
and ministry networks to mobilize the work
world for Christ.
Conceptualize how the research findings might
inform Christian business school curricula.
Method The case study method was used in this inquiry.
According to Tibben (2014), “case study methods
are appropriate for capturing influences that
physical and social environments exert on the
adoption of information” (p. 628). The means for
identifying influential factors exerted by AWOP
included: (a) a literature review, (b) an interview
with Ron Touby, AWOP Operations Director and
Cincinnati City Director for CRU, (c) attendance
at an AWOP Leadership Summit, and (d) follow-
up questions posed to both Ron Touby and Chuck
Proudfit, founder and president of AWOP.
Informing Curricula A number of research findings might be identified
as conceptually having prospect for informing the
curricula at Christian business schools. Two of
the possibilities include:
Use of Miller’s (2007) Four E’s model to help
engage students in a dialogue about the ways
people integrate faith and work.
Introduction of the ROI: Return on Involvement
tool for beginning ministry in the marketplace.
Research Questions 1. What is the strategic emphasis of At Work On
Purpose for marketplace ministry?
