The article on diversity management is a study on individual cultures coming together at the work place and how the work culture could either be a form of integration or disintegration for the people. The research is based on the South African army using 238 members. Basing the research on the army is a good choice since people from all over the country apply for the military which gives the military community distinctive individual cultures. The suggestion of the study is there are statistically important personality differences concerning the participant’s observation of the managerial ethnicity.
The intention of the lesson is to find out individual differences that manipulate employee’s perception of their managerial ethnicity in the South African armed forces. The author does a good job in looking at the individual cultures and what molds the cultures. In the review there is use of questionnaires as a research method. Questionnaires could sometimes provide bias information. The people given questionnaires could lie or refrain from giving information about the workplace considering the high secrecy in the military. The researcher would instead stay in the military camp instead and collect information through observation (Patton, 2005). The author also states that diverse cultures at the place of work leads to creativity and openness to change but fails to state the downside of it which is conflict. When the different cultures come together there could be conflicts in ethical issues and running of the organization since each individual feels they are right (Schein, 2010).
The literature review follows the format as taught. The author gives a brief introduction of what the research is about and goes ahead to give previous research that has been done on the topic by other authors. The review only fails in that it does not give the gap in previous research works. In my opinion individual cultures, once they come together in an organization, are broken and assimilated by the organizational culture. Individual cultures only emerge and sometimes form subcultures only when the organizational culture is weak and unstable.
