Debates continue to emerge regarding the kind of student leaders needed in the future in the education industry and regarding the best leadership preparation strategies (Lokkesmoe, Kuchinke & Ardichvili, 2016). Several studies have focused on the need for reforms in leadership in schools, but very few of them have focused on cross-cultural competence and how co-curricular and curricular activities would facilitate cross-cultural student leaders. Intercultural competence has grown in many fields and has become fundamental, given the unprecedented complexity that leaders are expected in the ever-interconnected world.

There is a need to offer a responsive and integrated leadership advancement curricula and experiences needed by future student leaders in education. A dominant critique of programs related to student leadership development is the disjointed strategy to what is holistic, consistent educational experience that would also reflect in academic performance (Lokkesmoe, Kuchinke & Ardichvili, 2016). In response to having a comprehensive and seamless educational experience, it is paramount to develop and advocate for the integration of curricular and co-curricular experience. Such skills support outstanding academic success as well as inter-cultural leadership development.
