Discussion: Forecasting During Times of Uncertainty

Introduction Your business has to deal with an unforeseen emergency that has temporarily halted your operations. You need to make big decisions involving forecasting, supply chain, and other areas. You also need both a method and a plan to do this effectively. What do you do?

The following video outlines qualitative and quantitative methods. As you view the video, make note of how these methods could adapt to an emergent situation.

Now that you've viewed the video, explain the different types of demand forecasts. Describe your thought process on how the different types of forecast methods can be applied to an emergent situation and how they can be affected by an emergent situation.  Which method do you feel is most effective in the situation given above? Draw on your personal experience(s) and this week's readings.

In response, select two of your peer's posts who selected a different method and discuss the effectiveness of the method you each selected. Try and persuade one another that your method is the best option. Remember, you can agree or agree to disagree.

Think about the challenges in the scenario above. Based on your past experience (if you've encountered such a problem) and the readings for this week, explain to your peers how you would address the problem.  How would you determine the most efficient way to incorporate a process to manage your inventory?  What inventory management strategies would you apply and why?

Respond to two of your peers and discuss the effectiveness and efficiency of their solution. How does it differ from yours? Discuss alternative solutions for you both.
