Nursing Research

            In my practice, I can relate to Essential VI, Health Policy and Advocacy.  My practice will likely change in the future for the better.  We have been witnesses to how nurses are reaching Congress and speaking out about important health topics that affect us all.  The vast majority of American nurses have been promoting a culture of health in their communities for decades (Hall, 2017).  Nurses account for decision making in the workplace as well as other areas. Shared governance committees provide guidance for practices in the workplace to improve the overall standard of care given during hospitalizations.

            Political action in nursing is essential to make changes in healthcare policy. Legislators often need guidance when implementing changes in healthcare policy. Because nurses have a wealth of knowledge and firsthand view of the challenges in healthcare, nurses are ideal for presenting proposals to legislators (Olson, 2016).

            In the future, more nurses will be more involved in giving back to the community by volunteering for various projects and getting involved in the legislative process.  At my facility, one of the most rewarding projects we have participated in was the soup kitchen and meals on wheels program which is part of the United Way (community). Providing these resources and volunteering helps to provide relief to the community in which the government programs are stretched thin.
