Week 3: Discussion

Study 2: Health empowerment among immigrant women in transnational marriages in Taiwan .

Brief Description of Method Employed:

Qualitative method was used in the research. The type of method of used in the research is known as Participatory Action Research (PAR) and it involved in-depth interviews with the women participants. 680 women participated in the study and this was done in 8 workshops. Participatory observations were also made.

Data Collection Steps

Participatory observation

A number of research team members went to the field and recorded field notes in all the 8 workshops.

Development of semi-structured questionnaire.

These would be used during the in-depth analysis.

In-depth interviews were conducted.

This involved interviewing the women in the workshops to get a deeper understanding of their personal experiences.

Tape recording

The interviews were tape recorded as a method of data storage.

Transcription

The interviews were also transcribed and important points relating to the study were identified.

Conclusion:

The method used in the study was effective for the type of study that was being conducted. This is because the data that was required is qualitative in nature and therefore interviews would be very effective. Additionally, making observations about the interactions in the workshop between the women would determine if the women were able to relate well with what was being taught. The interviews, especially, would determine their understanding.
