Week 1 Discussion

The global societal topic that I would like to research further for my final week research paper is unemployment and lack of economic opportunity.

I listed all the research topics and then did a background research on all the topics based on the one which is the most current issue in today’s society. I then selected three research topics which according to me were the most current issues in today’s society. I brainstormed on all the three topics to get a general view of the ideas relating to the topics and finally chose the topic of unemployment and lack of economic opportunity because I was able to relate it with the current problems facing our society and it also had good ideas on how it could be written to produce an excellent and well detailed research paper.

According to me, the following steps are effective for determining if a source is scholarly,

Checking on the authors; if their names and credential are provided and if the credentials provided are relevant to the information provided, then the source is scholarly.

Checking on the publishers of the information whereby I will examine whether they belong to an academic, scholarly or professional organization.

Checking on the timelines provided and for the timelines; I will check if the date of publication is provided and if it’s provided, then the source is scholarly.

Decent work deficits still continue to remain widespread although the global unemployment has stabilized. The global economy is still not creating enough jobs. Private companies and public corporations need to put additional efforts in order to improve the quality of work for jobholders. The gains of growth should also be shared equitably so that citizens of a country get equal opportunities in employment (Bhargava, 2006).

I would prefer to use scholarly sources as compared to other sources because their level of authority and credibility evident in scholarly sources will always help in improving the overall content quality of a research paper.

Week 3 Discussion

The global societal issue chosen was unemployment and lack of economic opportunity. Unemployment has been caused by a mismatch between the positions to be filled and the available workers, lack of skills, experience and economic conditions. The number of workers available in some countries are more than the available positions to be filled. There is also a skills gap since people lack adequate skills to secure employment. For example, the number of jobs available for IT professionals are increasing while the number of jobs for bank tellers are decreasing due to issues such as artificial intelligence. Failure to learn the skills that are needed in the job market contributes to unemployment and lack of economic opportunities. Further research on the topic of employment and lack of economic opportunity is very important. This is because it identifies the causes, consequences and solutions to unemployment and lack of economic opportunities.

Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity should be solved by providing unemployment benefits because they cause adverse effects on the economy such as increasing crime levels and slow the economic growth rate.

Unemployment and lack of economic opportunity adversely affects youths. It negatively affects their physical well-being, impedes their skills development and causes youth homelessness. Unemployed youths are at a higher risk of developing mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. They also develop high stress levels and their family relationships are affected. Without employment, youths are unable to learn more skills that would have helped them secure better jobs.  A surprising statistic is that 1.76 million were economically inactive in 2017. “The unemployment rate for people aged 18-24 was 10.6% in August-October 2017, down from 11.4% a year ago. 416,000 18-24-year olds were unemployed, while 1.76 million were economically inactive. 3.50 million were in work” (Sánchez-Jankowski, 2018). This shows how various countries have failed to utilize human capital that would have helped spur growth rate.
