Do you have a question about the

course, about a specific assignment,

about anything to do with the work you

are completing? Please use this spot to

ask, especially if you believe the answer

is important to everyone in the class. If

your question is more personal in nature,

please feel free to send me a note using

the email tool. I promise to get back to

you as soon as possible!

Welcome to the class!

It is very important that every student is

aware of and complies with the APUS

policy on plagiarism. Please take a few

minutes to read the policy found in the

Student Handbook. Violating the policy

and saying you didn't know are not

acceptable. Everyone is expected to

abide by all aspects of the policy, no

exceptions. Please take the opportunity

to review all the information available

and ask questions if you have any.

Submit the following statement with

your Week 1 introduction:

"I have read and understand the

Academic Integrity policies of the

university, including the plagiarism policy

and incorporating quotes in my writing."

Your first post in this discussion must be

250 words. It must be made in the first

week of class. It is used to confirm your

entry into the course. If you do not write

a 250 word first post in this discussion

within a week, you will be dropped from

the course.

Discuss the following:

1. What is cyber warfare?

2. What is a network?

3. What constitutes a threat to a

network?

Instructions: Your initial post is due by

11:55 Eastern Time on Wednesday.

After you post, respond to at least two

of your classmates. Choose classmates

who do not have any responses. If all

classmates have at least one response,

then you may respond to any thereafter.

Remember, responses to other

classmates' threads are in addition to

any responses within your own

discussion thread, to include any

questions from the instructor. You must

also respond to questions asked of you

by either me or your classmates. Initial

Posts are due by Wednesday, 11:55.

Responses are due by Sunday, 11:55,

both times ET no matter where you are

personally located. These instructions

will apply to each week's discussion, so

please keep note of them.

fictional country. Based on this week's

readings, what would you select as your

cyber target and how would you attack it

? How might your target country's level

of technology and connectivity affect

your choices and the potential

effectiveness of your plan? Would it be

better to ensure deniability or could it

enhance the effectiveness of your attack

by publicly claiming credit?

Many security experts argue that their

primary concern isn't hardware or

software. It's peopleware. Successful

attacks often rely on some form of social

engineering either to obtain access

information or for the attack itself.

Phishing, in particular, has become a

growing concern. Research a phishing

technique, including an actual case

example if possible, and provide a brief

summary discussing:

(a) the ruse employed

(b) the target (bank account access,

identify theft, etc.)

(c) how successful it was

(d) whether the perpetrators were ever

A number of web based firms offer what

they describe as a free online security

check of your PC or network. Some

require download of executable software

for the check. Would you trust such an

offer? Why or why not?

Several firms offer fee based

professional network security evaluation.

Locate the web page for one such firm

and briefly describe some of the services

offered.
