After reading "The Masque of the Red Death" and "Hills Like White Elephants" and watching the above videos on setting and symbol, complete the following tasks:
1. Respond to one or more of the prompts below in at least three full paragraphs.
2. Respond to the posts of two other classmates: offer followup, ask a further question, suggest an interpretation. In other words, enrich the discussion, take it further; do not just say "I agree" (or the equivalent) and move on. Responses should be three to four complete sentences each.
For both tasks above, point out specific instances from the stories to help illustrate your points; don't rely on generalities. And do not simply summarize or re-tell the stories; I've already read them.
For a supplement, click here to hear a good dramatic reading of "Masque" with appropriate video and sound effects. It's about 15 minutes long. (This is not a substitute for reading; it's a good idea to have the story open as you watch/listen.)
Prompts
How does each story's setting influence (or determine, or illustrate) its action? That is, what key happenings in the story are a result or function of the setting?
How does each story's setting influence (or determine, or illustrate) character? That is, what do we learn about the people in the story which is a result or function of the setting?
What role does symbol play in each story? What are the symbols, what might they stand for?
