Classmate’s Discussion (Charles)

Cultural diversity is a term used to describe people from all walks of life and backgrounds (Man, 2021). Cultural diversity can be found on every continent and plays a significant role in shaping our identity and place in society (Man, 2021). When intolerances occur in the workplace surrounding cultural differences, such situations can cause not only ethical but legal issues as well. According to Man (2021), "It's not uncommon for people to fear what they don't understand. Through a rich diversity of cultures, discrimination can be stamped out because it teaches the society that different doesn't mean bad" (para 8).

I work for a nonprofit organization founded by a conservative Christian family. Although this nonprofit is vital to our community by providing resources to unhoused youth so they can graduate high school, there are unspoken rules that all staff are aware of and must adhere to. Amongst these unspoken rules is the commitment to the Christian faith. Some of our youth proudly follow the Wiccan path. While this is their right to freedom of religion, there is an unspoken rule to "cut back" on the services we provide to them. Because this is a form of discrimination, I inform the youth that they are protected under the law (Wigington, 2019). Educating them on their rights to wear certain jewelry, such as a pentagram, is not cause to deny or scale back the benefits they receive (Wigington, 2019). I advise these youth to always be polite and graceful, even in the face of ignorance and hostility. I also informed them of legal options, including calling the local OCR office, which will open an investigation if the allegations are found to be credible.

Creating a welcoming space for everyone is not only ethical, but it is the right thing to do. Education and an honest dialog will go a long way in resolving many biases and prejudices. In the end, we are all equal and deserve equal treatment.

Classmate’s Discussion (Erma)

Cultural diversity is the quality of different cultures converging, but the different cultures respect each other's differences. Cultural differences or diversity can be by race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social status, age, religious beliefs, political beliefs, and financial situation. Cultural differences in the workplace are an encouraging tool to have for there are more influences from diverse inputs to resolution and production for the work being performed (Patrick, Kumar 2012). The workplace with the intent to have multiculturalism thrives off of having management making a more positive work environment.

Dealings with cultural diversity in the workplace can also have disadvantages. Some of the disadvantages or barriers can be discrimination, harassment, and prejudice. Having a strong management team that creates a work environment to have workplace diversity training could help in negative situations in the workplace. But, with this training, the rights and dignity of others could be restored back to respectability (Latonero, 2018). When conflict resolution is used along with the code of ethics in a diverse workplace, this could lead to more creative products as well as better hiring practices that include diverse individuals. Workplace losses can be minimal when the work environment is diverse. Diversity positive can also reduce the high rate of turnover of employees in the workplace. When a company has a strong code of ethics, and a very diverse employee ratio, there can be a rewarding effect on the entire agency which makes everyone feel like they're on a positive team. Diversity is a plus in the workplace!

Culture is the colors of the rainbow that represent the different types of nationalists of the world. The term involves how we interact with one another, and societies, along with a person’s beliefs, people, and lifestyle. The beginning of cultural characteristics and where they existed or location plays a significant role in their ethnicity. Having lived around different cultures I had the opportunity to gain much knowledge and insight into how others lived. When I first started the journey of meeting others and their different background, I soon realized that many of our celebrations were similar with different decorations, food, and music. Diversity begins with the different races that we are surrounded by daily. When referring to people within an ethnic, where physical appearances such as beliefs, language, and faith. The diversity of different cultures should be respected and recognized for who they are not what others want them to be. One issue that others think is a sore thumb is the language barrier. The United States known as the melting pot or salad bowl brings in different cultures tossing them around here and there. Cultural diversity in the workplace and the many different languages can be over barring (James,2003).

In my previous employment, there was this young Ghanaian physician who had an attitude out of this world he wanted you to jump when he wanted you to. You couldn’t walk beside him as a female you should follow behind him. This situation was not a language barrier it was his cultural norm or more like a power trip. This particular doctor and I had several issues ahead of us especially when he threw the patient chart at me and I threw it back at him was I wrong, yes but at the time it didn’t matter. He would speak to you in his native language or at you not knowing I understand some of what he was saying. I knew we had to learn and understand that co-existence needs to happen after several meetings and me looking at him sideways we became to embrace one another’s cultural differences. As I look back at it now it was beneficial for everyone to resolve cultural competence and the diversity between the beliefs and norms is what it takes to have a smooth transition (Joseph, n.d.).

There are several factors counselors should consider when dealing with Cultural diversity and competence: Flexibility open mindedness and no judgment. Counselors should make sure they are aware that ethnic identity is an important part of personal identity, and it may be hard to apply if one is not an active member of it. Communication is also a key factor when getting to know more about another person’s culture.
