The event should come from a well-known news source, such as ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, NPR, PBS, BBC, National Geographic, The New York Times, and so on. Post a link to the news story, and in your initial post, identify the following:

· Summarize your news story and its contributions to the science or STEM fields.

· If your news event is overtly related to diversity, how does this event contribute to diversity studies? If your news event does not directly relate to diversity, how could the science behind your event be applied to diversity studies?

In response to your peers, provide feedback about their news story and describe the value of the scientific lens for understanding diversity.

Angelia Elser - Professor John Crassidis from The University of Buffalo aerospace engineering speaks about the first all-civilian space crew. Elon Musk founder and chief engineer of SpaceX made not only reusable rockets but is now allowing civilians of all backgrounds, colors, religion, an opportunity to experience space travel. Inspiration4 is the mission that allowed nonprofessional crew members fly the space craft around the earth for 3 days. The four members of the crew included 2 females and 2 males. Jared Isaacman is an experienced pilot. Sian Proctor a geoscientist and 4th African American female to travel to space. Christopher Sembroski an Air Force Veteran and commercial astronaut. Hayley Arceneaux a Phsyician assistant at St. Jude’s Hospital, also the youngest American and 1st cancer survivor to travel to space. This correlate with diversity in the fact that now anyone can space travel, you do not have to be an astronaut to be able to experience this. Neil Armstrong once said, “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

The news story I selected is about the President of the United States appointing and announcing the members of his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The group of 30 people is called PCAST for short and is a "direct descendant of the scientific advisory committee established by President Eisenhower in 1957 in the weeks after the launch of Sputnik, PCAST is the sole body of external advisors charged with making science, technology, and innovation policy recommendations to the President and the White House" (The White House, 2021). What makes this story notable is that fact that the group is the most diverse it has ever been in US history. Half of the council are women and one third are people of color or immigrants. Women and minorities are known to face additional challenges, including discouragement, when entering the STEM fields so I think it is amazing that they are being represented on this esteemed council for all to see, know and hear from. The article includes a quote from PCAST co-chair, Dr. Eric Lander that says in part, "Scientific progress depends on people seeing things in new ways, because they bring different lenses, different experiences, different passions, different questions. This PCAST is uniquely prepared because of its extraordinary scientific breadth, wide range of work experiences, and unprecedented diversity" (The White House, 2021). I am thrilled to see diversity being addressed in the highest office of our nation, not only on this council but in all departments. Our country will benefit greatly to hear from as many unique points of view as possible. The impact of that will trickle down throughout society for years to come.
