Leaders, in my opinion, can be both born or made or a combination of the two.  Although, that being said, I believe that a majority of leadership skills are learned behaviors from experience.  I would like to use the example of playing sports.  On a sports team, there is usually the stand-out athlete that possesses a high skill level, yet there is also usually one or two players that appear to be the leaders or "glue" to the team.  The "athlete" may seem to be a leader because they lead in scoring, defense, etc, but the "glue" players are essential to keeping the team focused and working together.  I have played sports my entire life and was never the "star" of the team, but I was a captain on both my varsity volleyball and softball teams.  Those skills were taught to me at a young age through things like sports and extracurricular activities where someone needed to inspire the rest of the group to their best potential.  Experience is a dominating factor when it comes to "who you are" and I believe that a leader is made more often than they are born.

DISCUSSION QUESTION

What aspects of transformational leadership seem to apply to Geoffrey Canada? Would you describe him as a charismatic leader?

Geoffrey Canada is most definitely both a transformational and charismatic leader.  His unbounded strive to get these kids to excel in school and get a college degree is the definition of transformational leadership.  He is inspiring these kids to excel and their parents to help their kids excel, and with his efforts, he has completely eliminated the achievement gap with his program.  Transformational leadership requires real emotion, integrity, trust, along with the ability to communicate your vision.  He has parents lined up, hoping for their child's name to be chosen to go to his school and if they aren't chosen, the parents are upset.  This clearly shows that he has convinced these families that his program works and he will help them succeed.  Geoffrey Canada is also inspiring others to want to spread this program far and wide to eliminate the achievement gap, which brings me to the next term, charismatic leadership.  His efforts and success rates have caused a notion to figure out his ways and implement them elsewhere.  He has caught the eyes of many others and that to me is charismatic.
