            After reading this week’s lesson, I realized that nursing informatics is used daily in my current practice as an acute care nurse.  On a daily basis, we track nurse sensitive indicators (e.g., falls, central line catheter associated blood stream infections, urinary catheter-associated infections) and implement protocols accordingly; use an electronic template to assess risks for various situations (e.g., falls, delirium, nutrition, aspiration, SI/HI, pressure ulcers) which tabulates a score that generates a consult with an appropriate provider, and integrates a plan of care into our notes and documentation; and generate order sets.

            Essential V, Informatics and Healthcare Technologies, is what I expect to change in the future in my current practice.   Knowledge of nursing informatics and how to apply it can greatly impact our daily practice especially in terms of quality and safety, all while providing a patient-centered care experience (Staggers, Iribarren, Guo & Weir, 2015).  Awareness of the capabilities and limitations of the technology used can also be used to enhance nursing care, and the nurse is responsible for being aware of potential disconnects (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018).
