Discussion Forum 6: Applied Nutrition

The last required forum for the semester will review the Applied Nutrition Chapters at the end of the textbook. Chapters 11, 12, 13 address special nutrition needs, weight management and nutrition for all ages.

Choose any of the topics and/or sites below with information associated with the information in chapters 11, 12 and 13. Review the information provided and in your own words, share with the class in the discussion forum. As always, be sure to respond to at least 2-3 other students. Your points are determined by how much you add to the discussion.

Chapter 11  explored various nutrition concerns people may have. Please select any of the Special Requests identified and review how people are impacted by the need for a modified diet regime. Your textbook identifies Low K-calorie, Low fat and Cholesterol, Low Sugar, Low Sodium, Food Allergies, Gluten Free, Low Lactose, and Vegetarian/Vegan diets. If you would like to review a different need for meal modifications, that would be okay as well.  Provide examples of recipes, restaurants or websites that may be of interest to people with special needs of a modified diet. It would also be beneficial to indicate who benefits from the modification reviewed.

Chapter 12  looked at the topics of Energy Balance and Healthy Body Weight.  Visit one of these suggested websites: FDA (http://fda.gov/), Shape Up (http://www.shapeup.org) or the Mayo clinic (http://www.mayoclinic.org/).  Review body fat levels and various ways to measure body fat composition. You can go to the Shape Up website and look for the following helpful links: Shape Up and Drop 10 or Body Fat Lab or Cyber Kitchen.  At the FDA website you could also type in diet drugs in the search window. Review how the diet drugs may help or hinder health.  The Mayo clinic website list many topics under energy balance. You may choose from those topics (suggestions: body fat composition, hormones that regulate hunger, weight loss remedies, drugs or gimmicks.

Chapter 13  covers nutrition across the ages. Consider any of these topics and websites. Culinary Institute of America Menu for Healthy Kids ( http://www.healthykids.ciachef.edu/ (Links to an external site.) ); Meal Makeover Moms  (www.mealmakeovermoms.com (Links to an external site.) ).  You may wish to look for websites that address nutrition for the elderly instead.
