Assignement 2: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM PROPOSAL
Emotional Intelligence or EQ is your ability to identify and comprehend emotions in yourself and others, and your ability to use this cognizance to manage your behavior and relationships. Emotional Intelligence is the “something” in each of us that is a bit intangible. It affects how we manage behavior, navigate social complexities, and make personal decisions that achieve positive results (Bradberry&Greaves, 2009). In my line of work, my emotional intelligence allows me to see the big picture or in other words have self-awareness of the various situations that affects people’s decision making and the immediate decisions I must make while simultaneously enforcing the law. My emotional intelligence allows me to look at the facts and not become affected by what I see or must do. Now this doesn’t always work out positively or negatively, because in certain situation you must show empathy, caring, and be strong for the victim; especially when it comes to children. Channeling your emotions to get the job done is key. ….but even that don’t always work

· Choose ONE of the components of EI and explain how it contributes to job satisfaction.
My choice of component of EI is Self-Management. Of the four components Self-awareness, Self-management,
Social-awareness, and Relationship management; Self-management is the one component I can control. Self-management is YOUR ability to use awareness of your emotions to actively choose what to say or do. How you react or emotionally perceive something says a lot about your character and your ability to get the job done. Example, your boss give you the task of presenting a new project to investors on Thursday (today is Monday). What do you do? It all comes down to how you accept the challenge to get the job done. Self-control in these situations is a sizeable piece of the pie but learning how to put a cork on your emotions before you blow could contribute to how you view your job satisfaction. You have control over the rumbling volcano of emotions you release. Exercise that control, --Breath, count to ten, take control of your self-talk, smile and laugh more, visualize yourself succeeding. These are controls I use to settle my volcano. What are some of yours? At the end of the day or my shift, my job satisfaction is knowing I was able to help someone and hopefully steer some you man/woman in the right direction.
Self-Management builds upon a foundational skill----Self-Awareness.
