Data holds the power to significantly influence virtually every aspect of our society.  As the UK Mathematician and architect, Clive Humby stated about its impact, “Data is the new oil." The information collected by firms and organizations holds the power to influence virtually every aspect of our lives, from the purchases we make to the music we listen to. but what do we do with all this information? With this in mind, watch the following  Ted Talk (Links to an external site.) .

Once you have watched the video, think critically and answer the following questions:

· What does data mean to you? How, as a society, should we use data? How should we not use data?

· The speaker comments that "data doesn't create meaning, we do".  Research one example where an organization used big data in a meaningful way. Describe what they did and the impact that it had, if any. Could the result have been achieved without data?

· Provide any additional thoughts on data, its use, and its effectiveness that you may have, including any questions that come to mind.

Feel free to provide any additional information or inquiry that you feel is relevant. Once you have submitted your initial post, comment on two posts from you classmates.

To me, data means information created by people to present some meaning. As a society, we should interpret data in the appropriate context and use critical thinking skills. We should not use data to make bad decisions, or to monitor people in ways that violate people’s privacy. My additional thought is that the source of information is important to the value of data. Some information can be difficult to access. Reliable and advanced information makes data more useful.

An example of organization that uses big data is Amazon. According to Supply Chain Digital (Galea-Pace, 2020), Amazon gathers individual customer’s data when they use the website, such as what they buy, items they looked at, shipping address, and whether they leave reviews. Amazon’s recommendation engine shows the particular item which a customer searches and enables Amazon to better predict what else the customer might be interested in. Thus, the recommendation system persuades a customer to purchase other items. In addition, Amazon uses big data to track inventory and warehouse to ensure orders are fulfilled quickly. Without big data, Amazon could not become the top e-commerce organization.

Data to me means information about a particular topic that can be used to explain meaning or reason.  We should use data as a society to add context and reason behind particular things.  An example of this would be sports analytics which use data to add context behind different things that are not apparent in a box score.  We should not use data to as the end all be all for making decisions.

An example of a company using data is Netflix.  Netflix uses data to track users viewing habits to help determine what topics the viewers have interest in when writing and developing new shows.  This allows Netflix to ensure it continues to put out content that the viewers are interested in and keeps them on their service vs switching to one of its competitors.  This has allowed Netflix to grow into a streaming giant, a far cry from the early days when the company shipped DVDs in the mail.
