2. In Lahore, Pakistan, rising sugar prices combined with high unemployment triggered riots led by three very politicized sheikhs. One of them said in his speech, "first they insult the prophet, then they raise the sugar prices". On this basis, the correspondent filed a story about riots in Pakistan caused by Muhammed cartoons. Is this fake news? Why or why not?

3. In Nigeria, violence by unemployed Muslim laborers against mostly Christian landowners and shopkeepers has been ongoing, with 17 significant riots in three years, almost none of which was reported in the global press. In 2006, a local Muslim political leader gave a speech inspiring yet another riot, citing in his speech the Danish publication of the cartoons. The international news services reported this riot as part of its coverage of the Muhammad cartoon controversy. Is this fake news? Why or why not?

4. How does Peterson think newsmaking efforts to frame news for local audiences create particular ways of imagining the world?

5. Peterson's methodology is primarily semiotic--an analysis of recurring symbolic constructions in the news stories. How effective do you think this method is for an analysis of framing? What kinds of questions do you think it would not be effective in answering?
