I found this cartoon that applies to Ch. 17’s section on unemployment insurance. Underlying the idea that some people like to scam for unemployment insurance, the cartoon is humorous but also truthful to some degree. Many taxpayers are continually frustrated with paying taxes for a program that so many people seem to abuse. At the same time, with the high unemployment rate, other people really need the small monthly payments when they do not have any other income. Not sure how much “Santa” works but he certainly must have a paper trail that verifies his employment if he wants a share of the government funds. (

Hi Student,
I agree with the message of the cartoon, and I like that it addresses an important issue in a humorous way. Where do we draw the line between abusers of the system and those truly in need? I have no idea. ( I do know that I have seen the benefits of unemployment first-hand when my friend’s dad lost his job. The unemployment insurance was a lifesaver to their family.
