Hippocampus

Discussion 3: Biological Basis of Behavior

What is the Hippocampus?

According to The Saylor Foundation (2015) the hippocampus “consists of two "horns" that curve back from the amygdala”.

It is very important when it comes to storing information in long-term memory.

In the picture, you see the horn like curve come off of the Amygdala, just like The Saylor Foundation (2015) described.

Regional Hippocampal Damage

Singh et al. (2018) wrote an article and did a study on schizophrenia patients. They stated that people with schizophrenia have “cognitive and mood impairments, including memory loss and depression, suggesting damage in the brain regions” (Singh et al., 2018, p. 199).

They concluded that “schizophrenia patients showed significantly decreased gray matter volume in the hippocampus” (Singh et al., 2018, p. 199). Saying that this could be the cause for the mood impairments and memory loss.

Facts:

“The name comes from the Greek words hippo, meaning horse, and kampo, meaning monster, as its shape resembles that of a seahorse” (Dresden, 2017, p.1).

Hippocampus is responsible for two types of memories:

Declarative memories are those related to facts and events.

Spatial relationship memories involve pathways or routes.

Why did I find this interesting?

I found the hippocampus interesting for many reasons..

I never realized that with schizophrenia, the gray matter of the brain is changed and the hippocampus is effected. This explains so much about their depressed moods and memory loss

Prior to this week, I didn’t know that the hippocampus is responsible for long-term memories. With damage to the hippocampus you could be living day to day without every remembering.

This reminded me of the movie “50 first dates”.. In which Drew Barrymore has a brain injury of the hippocampus.
