Which three skills and concepts you would most likely take away with you to use in real-world situations? Explain why.

The three skills and concepts that I would take with me to use at my current work situation are the characteristics of a change leader, the ethical dimensions of change, and the roles of leaders and followers during times of change. I would choose these three because they most reflect the daily situations that I am going currently going through. I began this school year surrounded by change. From the new administration, to the abundance of new faculty and staff, I am getting a first hand look on learning how to function under new leadership, as well as how to help my organization be successful for the myself and others around me. The ethical dimensions deal with my coworkers and stakeholders. I must be the difference everyday. For me, that means creating and living up to a standard that reaches far beyond myself, because I am a representation of the company that I work for and a reflection of the students that I teach.

What did you do well in this course and what could you have done better to gain more from this class?

I believed my understanding of the materials was excellent, but as usual my capacity for time management is always an issue due to my life style. I am getting better at it, but there is always room for improvement and for growth. In my future classes I do hope to be able to do better with this. But I can say that my collection of information has gotten better also.

Reflection

This course has been beneficial in highlighting the change process and how my current organization has avoided following a single change process model.  The school that I work for is under an immense amount of pressure to be ready for a new charter and a new graduate degree program for the Spring 2019 semester.  The changes that they are planning to implement are still mainly under veil while they await approval by the general assembly and the Chief Executive of Macau.  However, the leadership has shown their support of the changes and has asked for feedback from faculty on how we feel these new changes will affect our daily workflow.  There was resistance to the changes initially because of the poor communication of the proposed changes and charter but have since been reasonably irradiated.  This course has reiterated that communication is the key to successful change.

Following this course, I will communicate more clearly ideas and reasons for the change.  As an instructor and former chef, I have mostly been an authoritative leader, and it has been my way or the highway.  I will keep in mind that not everyone will always agree with the changes and that forcing the change on them is not the best route.  Changing the culture is also changing the behavior of the culture which was a strong concept in the research for the final assignment I wrote.  Another point to mention is that as a leader I will pay closer attention to when change is a necessity over when I think change is a need.  My feelings should be kept out of the equation with the focus squarely on the organization and its people.

I feel that I let myself down in this course, mostly because I have not been as focused these past weeks while dealing with the changing tides of my job.  I think one of the most significant bonds we all share is that we work full-time while juggling our doctoral journey and admittedly I let the stress take its toll on me this time.
