Discussion Board Forum 5 Prompt:

St. Augustine offers a Christian view of rhetoric in the classical period. He unifies rhetorical principles with the Christian calling, noting that rhetoric is not purely Christian but certainly can be employed for higher purposes. But where he might differ more from previous thinkers is how he perceives character in relation to rhetorical ability.

For this week’s post, address the following:

1) How does St. Augustine define/understand rhetoric?

a. Again, using his words here would be too easy, so you must explain his definition in your own words . This is an excellent practice for graduate level assignments, and it reflects a student’s interpretation of original works.

2) Why is ethos such an important component in his view of rhetoric? How does this consideration change rhetorical theory, especially in contrast with previous thinkers, particularly those views of the ideal or perfect orator?

3) How might Augustine view knowledge in relation to his religious views and rhetorical training?

4) You must reference specific passage(s) from the assigned reading using APA format. You may quote or summarize, but specific page numbers must be provided.

5) Include one or two questions you have about the assigned readings for this week (Use specific pages numbers as you reference parts of the reading).
