Discussion Board Forum 2 Prompt:
Plato is one of the most well-known critics of rhetoric, particularly when he reduces it to a relativistic language practice, yet he is also a significant part of the rhetorical tradition. In most discussions, the two most common rhetoricians mentioned are Plato and Aristotle. Of particular note is his Socratic method, the manner in which his characters reach Truth though question and answer.
For this week’s post, address the following:
1) How does Plato define/understand rhetoric?
a. Using his words here would be too easy, so you must explain his definition in your own words . This is an excellent practice for graduate level assignments, and it reflects a student’s interpretation of original works.
2) He is critical of rhetoric yet still gives the possibility of a rhetoric that would work. What part(s) of rhetoric does he seem to change in order to reconcile his differences with it?
a. Identify the particular part of rhetoric he “addresses” in order for it to work.
b. Give examples from his work to illustrate your answer.
3) How might you critique his view of rhetoric from a Biblical perspective? What part(s) would you see as points of consensus and which of dissensus?
4) You must reference specific passage(s) from the assigned reading using APA format. You may quote or summarize, but specific page numbers must be provided.
5) Include one or two questions you have about the assigned readings for this week (Use specific pages numbers as you reference parts of the reading).
