Why is it important to challenge single stories?
How does this topic relate to the concept of comparison/contrast? (Or to put it another way, why do you think I had you watch the video as part of this particular module?)

As you read the essays, think about the writer's strategies. What kind of evidence does he or she use in the causal analysis?
Then,
In a brief paragraph (Part 1):
Identify each of the factors Jacoby identi�es as contributing to the "dumbing" of people in the US. Explain each of the factors and how they contribute to the overall intellectual decline of the US citizenry. Why do you think she uses politics as a springboard for discussing anti-intellectualism?
In a second brief paragraph, discuss (Part 2):
Do you agree or disagree with Jacoby's assessment? Are we all getting dumber? Do you think we'd all be better o� "reading for hours in a tree house" rather than being online? Is there a happy medium? She mentions a number of problems with the lack of knowledge in our country today. Although the article is now ten years old, are there still things happening currently that either support or refute her claim?
In a third paragraph (also Part 2):
Choose one of the essays and discuss the following: What are the most interesting causes or e�ects that the article discusses? Does the writer convince you that we need to address this issue? What makes the article e�ective if you think it is a good article? If you don't think that it is an e�ective causal analysis, where does it fall short?
Finally, respond to at least one other student. You may agree or disagree with their “Part 2” response; provide an explanation of why you agree or disagree.

Evaluating Sources: Dolly, the First Cloned Sheep
For this DB assignment, you will read excerpts from four articles about Lamb Number 6LL3, a.k.a. Dolly, the first cloned sheep. Although only the first few paragraphs from each article are included here, take time to read the excerpts carefully. As you examine each excerpt, answer the following questions. Think about the author’s rhetorical stance (Module 4), as well as the kinds of sources that would be most effective in Essay 4.
Respond to the following questions (for questions 1 -4, choose at least two articles to comment on):
1. Before you actually read EACH excerpt, look at the title. What expectations does it raise? (Don’t overthink this question; will the article be funny, provocative, boring, opinionated?
2. How long are the writer’s paragraphs? What kind of vocabulary does he or she use?

3. Describe the writer’s voice and purpose. (Humorous? Technical? Serious? Argumentative?)
4. In your opinion, what kind of readers would most appreciate this article? Who is the target audience? In what kind of publication would you expect to �nd it?
5. Which article did you �nd the easiest to understand? Which was the most interesting? The most informative? If you were writing a research paper on cloning, which articles would you think about including in your research? (Answer this question after you have read all four excerpts. Your response to this question should have its own paragraph.)
6. For this assignment, your response to a classmate should address their responses to questions 2 through 5 and provide them with an alternative viewpoint. In other words, respond to someone whose choices and/or views may not align with your own. Therefore, you will need to explain WHY and not just the WHAT of your reply.
