PART 1
Discussion Board 1: Searching the literature
Step 1: Briefly describe in 50-75 words why this clinical problem is of interest to you.
· A clinical problem that I am interested in, is the lack or prenatal access for expecting mothers in wards 7 and 8 located outside the nation’s capital/ across the Anacostia river. Wards 7 and 8, are an area where healthcare access is not readily available. I want to research ways on how expecting mothers in wards 7 and 8 can get the care they need.
Step 2: Define elements of the clinical question using PICOT: |
Error! Filename not specified. P = Patients or population to target: expecting mothers across the anacostia river |
Error! Filename not specified. I = Intervention (assessment or treatment): looking at new development in the healthcare system for more accessible care |
Error! Filename not specified. C = Comparison treatment: I want to compare it to the ward 1 through 6 |
Error! Filename not specified. O = Outcomes: Does having more acessable clinics for expecting mother/mother to newborns help |
Error! Filename not specified. T = Time frame (optional): |
Step 3: Formulate your PICOT Question: Expecting mothers across the Anacostia river have a lack of prenatal care. With the lack of this care compared to wards 1-6, what is the outreach or plans that will allow more accessibility for this group ? Will this new development help in the accessibility of care? |
Step 4:
4a. Identify an article (published within the last 5 years) that addresses your PICOT question and briefly explain in 50-75 words how addresses your PICOT. For example, how did the author(s)’ findings impact your outcome of interest? Did the author(s)’ find the intervention significantly improved a health outcome, or significantly decreased the risk for an outcome occurring?
· The author addressed various outlets and developments that will positively impact the population that I am researching on. One of the interventions that I read, was the use of more community health workers and home health nurses in the OB field. This intervention would significantly improve the health outcome for prenatal care in Wards 7 and 8, by allowing more women to have their perinatal care taken care of.

PART 2
Discussion Board 1: Searching the literature
Use this worksheet to develop your clinical practice question. Write a purpose statement. Describe each PICO(T) element addressing your topic of interest. Then identify an article (written within the last five years) that addresses your PICO(T).
Complete the worksheet below and then CUT AND PASTE YOUR WORK to the Discussion Board (DB). Provide Constructive feedback to two peers on their work. For example, what additional information would you like to know about the findings? Do you have another article you could recommend? Please review DB rubric for full details.
Step 1: Briefly describe in 50-75 words why this clinical problem is of interest to you.
I elected this topic of interest because of the necessity for increased public awareness about the significant number of cases that involve racial disparities against women of color. It highlights the importance of providing efficient health care to diverse communities and populations that contain minority women. A major determinant in inequalities in health are centralized on socioeconomic status of the individual, while other factors also include geographic location, racism, and limited resources. The role of a future nurse gives us the opportunity to be advocates for patients who are denied equal care in a challenging system (Peterson, 2019; Williams, 2002).
Step 2: Define elements of the clinical question using PICOT: |
P = Patients or population to target: This population includes pregnant women of color, predominantly African Americans. |
I = Intervention (assessment or treatment): Identify the different factors that may lead to pregnancy related deathes and implement the strategies to reduce racial disparities and implicit bias. This can be conducted by improving access to care through collaborations between health facities and community services. |
C = Comparison treatment: Most pregnancy related deaths are preventable. Black women are three times likely to endure complications due to racial disparities. White women are more viewed as more valuable. Resources are made available |
O = Outcomes: Make a difference and reduce the amount of pregancy related deaths. Provide adequate diagnosis and educate patients about the pregnancy process and potenial signs of warnings that may occur. |
T = Time frame (optional): |
Step 3: Formulate your PICOT Question: In healthcare, what is the effect of racial disparities on morality rates of colored women compared to Caucasian women?
Step 4:
The main goal of this article was to create awareness to an increasing matter in the health community. Much of the reported pregnancy related deaths were preventable which emphasizes the mistreatment or misdiagnosis for complications that could have been discovered in earlier stages of the childbearing process. The authors underlined on the need of change by implementing protocols and training in eliminating racial biases. Participating in community prevention and addressing other contributing factors increases positive patient-provider interactions, treatment decisions, and health outcomes (Peterson et al, 2019).
