Discussion Question

Generally, premarital counseling resources encourage couples to begin talking about their expectations of each other in several general areas, some of which are listed below. These could be the cause of stress in marriages. Note the areas below and provide a detailed response as to what the top four issues should be addressed in the first few sessions of premarital counseling. Support your work with scholarly research and biblical application.

The 11 General Areas are:

· Overall satisfaction in the relationship

· Feeling heard (most people call this “communication”)

· Freedom to be authentic (ask for what I want)

· Ability to resolve conflict,

· Expectations regarding roles & chores

· Time together/apart

· Finances/Money

· Intimacy/Sex

· Perspectives on having/raising children

· Current issues with In-Laws (Family of origin-FOO)

· Family History – how FOO handled conflict, communicated, responded to emotions, etc.
