DISCUSSION NOTES FROM PPT

· Findings –This study found the mini lessons to be an effective way to increase letter recognition.

· Significance This study has identified effective literacy interventions for ELLs in the classroom and program.

· Research link- Piasta and Wagner (2011) agrees that Mini lessons are an effective method for increasing Letter recognition.

· Limitations- This study can not confirm Piasta and Wagner that Mini lessons are an effective method for increasing letter sound. This study could not assess if The treatment group received the lower average scores because of an ineffective intervention or because of excessive absences of one participant.

· Next Steps- Implement prescribed mini lessons to students throughout the end of the school year, modify a version for families to implement. Perform similar trial in the fall.

· New Questions- Why did students whose home language was English show the least growth? What interventions may be more effective for them?

ACTION PLAN

REFLECTION

· Strengths- This study has identified effective literacy interventions for ELLs in the classroom and program.

· Weaknesses- The males in this study all scored lower than most of their female peers, in spite of Higher initial scores, and high attendance.

· Change- The next intervention will allow for more hands on activities for students who are tactile learners.

Decisions

· The future interventions will have more tactile activities as well as more active activities and less sitting down. Prior to the next intervention I will survey the students on different interventions and make an informed decisoun that considers the males interest as well. I will take intentional observational notes twice a week during center times to see what learning activities interest the boys . I will do more research within my district with K and Pre-K teachers about interventions that are successful in increasing letter sound knowledge.

Time line

The timeline will be on going throughout June 9th which is the last day of school. The notes will be used to help inform the next literacy interventions in the fall.

Describe-

Who- I will be involved in making the changes and my teaching assistant will be involved in taking observational notes.

Changes will be made immediately, not in an organized study 3 times a week but in literacy interventions and games.

Changes will be made in the classroom, and in Professional learning community meetings with other teachers.

Plan for assessing the action plan

I will continue to use the quantitvie assessment with students and document if I’m receiving more positive feedback form the males.

I will invite one of the K or Pre K teachers to come do a reflective observation about my teaching strategies so that I can triangulate the student feedback with a peer coach’s feedback.

Overall this has been a rewarding and challenging project and I look forward to continuing to use research to improve my pedagogy and the experience of my students.
