Hello everyone,
Age diversity influences how students in a class interact and communicate with each other. Students in the same age group have a lot of interests in common compared to an age-diverse class. The differences in ages may cause social categorization in a learning environment which may hinder effective learning. An age-diverse education system encourages civility and unity among members of the community despite the stereotypes surrounding the suitable age of learning. Elder students in a class may have a hard time fitting in with the rest of the students because of the age difference and their appearance as adults (Ansari, 2019). In an age-diverse system, aged learners may appear mature and experienced than their younger counterparts. Age stratification in the education system plays an important role in promoting respect as well as debunking age stereotypes in the school and the society. The difference in age among students in a classroom improves innovation and problem-solving in the group.
Educators need to understand the age structure of their students and their age diversity. This helps them standardize the students and create an environment that ensures the needs of all students are met regardless of their age. Educators may replace age segregation with age integration to ensure that the differences in age among students do not deny them or favor their participation in certain school and social activities (Dannefer, 2017). This will create an education system that considers students across all age groups and which does not discriminate learners based on their age. Educators may discourage ageism in the education system by engaging adults in elementary school activities. Intergenerational interactions among students may help educators understand the capabilities and strengths of each student as well as promote the exchange of knowledge.
