Unionization of Nurses and the Workforce Culture of Safety

Unionization of Nurses and the Workforce Culture of Safety

One of the defining attributes of the professional practice of an advanced practice nurse is professional capacity and commitment in embracing informed strategies in promoting continuous adoption of evidence-based practice change in their workplace and beyond. Based on the dictates of the MSN essential on health policy and advocacy, as a general expectation, for qualification as a successful and impactful practitioner, the practice of an advanced nurse should be evidenced by a committed efforts to inform and influence adoption and practicing of evidence-based practice change beyond mere continuous improvement to the quality of their nursing care as individuals (Barton, 2016). To achieve this MSN essential, advance practice nurses should contribute to evidence-based change at the system level by actively participating in the policy making process using informed advocacy strategies (Barton, 2016). Labor unions promises competitive value as an advocacy strategy by advanced practice nurses.

Of particular significance, unions and collective bargaining agreements are in record for assuring unionized nurses a competitive advantage in the quality of the workplace environment compared to their non-unionized counterparts (Pittman & Scully-Russ, 2016). As an emphasis, in practice, unionized nurses are characterized by better working terms and conditions in relation to compensation and their voice in the decision making process at the workplace, including critical issues impacting on nursing and patient care outcomes such as nurse-to-patient ratio. Staffing has been closely associated with having far-reaching implications on the performance and outcomes of nursing in organizations. Not only are staffing issues the leading cause of job dissatisfaction and burnout among nurses and related high rates of turnover; they are the single most important cause for preventable medical errors and poor relationships between nurses and their patients and others in the workplace (Scruth, Garcia & Buchner, 2018). Being unionized is a binding solution here and a promise to a workplace culture of safety.

Reasons why Nurses should be unionized

Nurses’ unions have, most of the time, advocated for better working conditions. The unions have urged that the relationship between nurse-to-patient ratios should be taken into considerations to ensure that they offer better treatment services. Nurses should, therefore, be unionized because when unions are formed, they help in improving the law that is responsible for regulating hospitals and other facilities that offer health services. When unions are created, they also help Nurses to air out the issues affecting them and their interests (Stichler, Pelletier &Thomason, 2019).

Mostly the dominant thing that brings about a disagreement between nurses and employers is a strike. When unions are formed, the level at which nurses strike can be reduced because there will be a good relationship between the nurses and the employers. When unions are also formed, their jobs will be protected because unions prohibit the firing of nurses and also makes their wages to be protected. In contrast, non-union nurses are not subjected to the protection, and therefore, they might lose their jobs quickly when they do not form the unions.

Impact of unionization to a workforce culture of safety

Unionization helps to reduce illness, which may be as a result of unsafe working conditions (Sojourner et.al, 2015). Some of the organizations do not offer safe conditions where workers can settle when and when the unions are formed; it may create some assurance on the improvement of working conditions because that might be the main aim of establishing the unions (Mackenzie, Tinsley & Tsuchiya, 2018). Positive safety culture is also preserved in the organization as the way of doing things in the organization may not be changed after the unionization; for example, when the unionization of nurses has taken place. Unionization also helps to gear up excellent standards for education; this ensures that the culture of people acquiring more knowledge is maintained.

Activism can be used by Nurse Practitioners to create change. Health policy changes can occur by campaigning. Being unionized is another term for being a team. The benefits of being in a union are greater and evidence based proves how it can improve healthcare. Some of those benefits include being able to have a voice regarding general nursing concerns. I believe that nurses should be unionized as there is proof of the results. Being unionized can impact the workforce culture by improving both patient and staff safety. Nurses in a union are able to attend to different meetings across the country and meet in order to advocate for patients (Seago, Spetz, Ash, Herrera, & Keane, 2011). Patient to nurse ratio is one of those safety concerns that can be addressed through out a union of nurses. Nurses are able to have a voice together rather than alone. A voice that can be heard throughout the country and be able to reach millions of people. Nurse safety can also be acquired with this type of unionization (Asegid, Belachew & Yimam, 2014). That is because nurses can improve their working environment by addressing the typical issues leading to stress reduction. If nurses feel happier in their work environment, productivity will improve, resulting in safer overall patient care. Political activism works better when in number, that is why being part of a union of nurses can create potential change. Master’s essential number three about Quality Improvement and Safety relates to this because a union will provide quality improvement and safety in healthcare.

The decision to join a union is usually personal, and it is influenced by various factors, including political views education, professional goals, and support from the management (Fenstermacher, 2019).  However, there are several reasons why nurses should be unionized. Through the union, nurses can negotiate some enforceable agreements that can improve working conditions such as improved nurse to patient ratio, duties with regards to fixing standards of care, benefits, vacation scheduling, and pay scales, among others. Health and policy advocacy are one of the MSN essentials. MSN graduate nurses have the necessary skills and knowledge to foster health, fashion the system of healthcare delivery, and promote values such as social justice through advocacy and policy processes. Nurses can effectively do this through unions (Doyle, 2018).

Through unionization, the advance nurse practitioners can be able to effectively support the efforts to ratify enhanced laws that properly regulates healthcare institutions to offer working environments that are safe to all the healthcare providers.  Through the union, nurses can also be able to appeal some laws such as mandatory overtime, long working hours, and low pays (Doyle, 2018). Studies have shown that unionized hospital nurses earn higher wages than non-unionized hospital nurses do. Again, the union members usually enjoy several benefits, including direct representation, especially when there is a disciplinary case going on or when certain working conditions demand labor-management negotiation. This ensures that there is a fair hearing and resolution of the issue without any form of victimization (Fenstermacher, 2019).

There are still several risks in the current healthcare system, including an inadequate number of nurses as compared to the significant number of patients. An adequate makeover of the work environment in healthcare institutions is needed in order to minimize medical errors, retain experienced and skilled nurses, employ new nurses, and ensure patient safety. These measures will promote the culture of safety within the work environment. Through unionization, nurses stand a better chance of pushing for the implementation of these policies, which enhances the culture of safety (Stichler et al., 2019)

Health Care Policy

It is crucial that nurses are syndicated because such process provides them the chance to create their voice audible enough to become heard. They obtain the necessary strength for more events to sustain all of them with due significance. Therefore, they will probably propel some actions that may enhance the all around health of others (Mastek, Levy & Cors, 2016).

Today's world is filled with activism. People grow the necessity to express a few of the issues that occur to help make the necessary agencies take appropriate action against it. It may also help to focus on some people who may be dealing with these complaints. The activism element has additionally found its distance to advanced nursing (Cox, 2016). The document aims to exhibit why it's important for nurses to become syndicated and also the impact of these unions around the culture of security.

A few of the problems felt by nurses might be associated with securing the security element at work. Nursing unions will probably propel the supply of necessary equipment that staff may use to prevent the chance of infection and harm to health centers. Unionization has a big impact around the security culture from the workforce. It pushes staff to want to consider a few of the practices that may predispose these to harm (Mason et al., 2011). Trade unions also provide them with the chance to convey on their own a few of the areas by which the work they do establishments will have to be improved to make sure their safety (Lewis, 2017).

Unions possess a considerable role to participate in the lives of advanced nurses. They give them the chance to inquire about their legal rights effectively. This method enables these to put lots of focus on activities that will probably benefit patients.

For me the fundamental III, improvement of quality and safety, is carefully associated with this problem. That one applies, in connection with this for nurses, as union representatives ought to be ready to use the standard concepts inside the organization and therefore to enhance the significant conditions and everything associated with security and standards inside the same organization.

Health Care Policy

All nurses deserve excellent wοrking cοnditiοns tο be able tο execute their mandate within the health sector. Because of this, the presence of unions might be considered among the easiest ways by which nurses will have a body that addresses all of the prοblems that affect them at wοrk. Such issues include discriminatiοn at the οffice, issues regarding compensation, the significant conditions, and lots of additiοnal factοrs affecting the delivery οf labοr within the nursing sectοr (Heisenberg, 2015). The best chοice for nurses is to allow them to be unionized. Unions will have a significant role in making certain that the desires of nurses are addressed. Once the working conditions and terms of nurses are great, the whοle healthcare sectοr is gοing to be improved. Information from the Washington-based Department for Professional Employees shοws that nurses whο're in uniοns might have a typical extra earning οf $200-$400 more every week American (ACCN, 2011).

In compliance with Essential II: Business and Systems Leadership NSG, using unions will give you sοme type οf leadership which will represent the prοblems that face nurses at wοrk. The 2nd essential οf nursing sees that business and system leadership is extremely important to the prοmοtiοn οf safe and quality patient care. Using unions will offer you a democratic type of leadership fοr that nurses tο engage in discussing their issues tο allow them to be addressed.

The workforce culture οf nurses needs a system that cοnstantly mοtivates and empοwers these tο deliver within the healthcare industry. Because οf this, getting a union can create hope and empower nurses that generally have felt their voices have nοt been heard (Heisenberg, 2015). Uniοns, within this situatiοn, play a significant rοle of making certain that: Injuries are reduced in the workplace, amounts of sickness which come because of work are totally reduced, along with a better culture at work is developed. Out of this, it's obvious the workforce culture of nurses is going to be completely improved if unions are brought to manage their matters and demands.
