According to (study.com), outliers defined as extremely high or low values in a set of data that can affect the mean and skew distributions. Because outliers can communicate very important aspects of the data under examination, the possibility exists that an error in data collection constitutes an outlier, however, this does not hold true for every dataset (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2013). Outliers tend to skew a distribution of scores or values of data collections, which is why removing outliers can yield a symmetrical distribution (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2013). There are several outliers in the NBA. Kobe Bryant is an NBA legend; Kobe Bryant was an outlier in the article I chose explained how his career compares to the NBA averages. Michael Wilczynski, an NBA fan observed average career spans for professional NBA players. According to (Chalabi, 2015, “the trend was those NBA players who retired in 1947 had only been playing professional basketball for one year, by 2010 that figure had risen to six years. Kobe Bryant retired from the NBA in 2016, Bryant stands out because he reached his 20-year mark in the professional basketball world.”

A journal published by the undergraduate students at Macalester College in Minnesota did a statistical analysis on Kobe Bryant and it was even more astonishing. In their findings, they found out that the players in the NBA correlated with their length of career being in the NBA. Kobe Bryant is 6 feet 6 inches and the NBA average player height is 6 feet 7 inches. “They also stated that “typically, the taller a player, the greater their chance of having a longer career. “They also found that guards (the position played by Bryant) and forwards tend to have a shorter career compared to centers.” (Chalabi, 2015). What made Kobe Bryant an outlier was his height for the position he played in the NBA, and he played for the same team, which was the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years.
