As a Nurse Practitioner we have many opportunities and options to choose from which is why our career choice is such  a great one! We are able to add to our education by seeking specialty certifications if we so choose. I desire to go into the aesthetics area of nursing. I would like to be a part of helping people feel better about themselves and their appearances. I want to learn more about the treatment options that would benefit patients in that setting and be able to give recommendations. I plan to also be involved in pre-op and post operative care for elective surgeries within this setting.  I may change my mind at any time if I find interest elsewhere and that is a wonderful option to have. Staying within one specialty for too long is not my forte and I plan to keep my options open and provide the best quality care wherever I may end up.

After reviewing the different setting in which Family Nurse Practitioners work. What setting will be your career choice and why?

I would like to work as Acute Nurse Practitioner. Since my graduation as an RN I have been working in the hospital settings, and I think provide care to the patient in acute distress is a challenger as a health care provider, as a human being, at that moment we must to resume all knowledges and skills to help the patient and survive the situation, stabilizing the patient as soon as possible to avoid complications and secondary bad effects, and many other activities like order and interpret tests and laboratory values, develop treatment plans, collaborate with physicians and other specialists, provide direct patient management from admission to discharge, stabilize patients in critical care areas, diagnosis of medical conditions, assist medical team with bedside procedures, develop follow-up care, monitoring hospitalized patients and tracking progress, setting patient goals to lead patients towards discharge, collaborating with physicians to ensure patient care needs are met, perform procedures, such as: Intubation & extubating, Lumbar puncture, Casting and splinting injuries, Administering conscious sedation, Wound debridement, Performing incision and drainage, Place central venous catheters. Insert chest tubes. These activities make our labor complete as a Health Care Provider. An Acute Nurse Practitioner is a dynamic and powerful expression of the medical knowledges.

I hope to work in gastroenterology under a team of MD’s who preform endoscopies and colonoscopies. I will be doing pre-surgical assessments and post-surgical assessments preparing patients for their procedures and following up with any post diagnosis requirements.

Preforming history and physicals. Educating the patient on bowel preps, and giving them scripts for their bowel prep. Screening the patient for anesthesia clearance, and educating them on the process of anesthesia. Most patients are afraid of being put to sleep, however if the understand the process and have a detailed explanation I believe some of the fears will be avoided. I look forward to helping patients reduce cancer as a Family Nurse Practitioner.

As a future Family Nurse Practitioner we have the option of working in many different settings which is one of the reasons why I chose this career path. Family nurse practitioners are able to work at Hospitals, Clinics, Private offices/private practice, Hospice centers, Nurse-managed health centers, School clinics, Home health care, Community health centers. However, I would like to work in private office settings and community health centers focusing in the adult/elderly population. The reason why these two settings are the ones I want to focus on is because it is where I can meet patients who are in higher need of health education and assistance in how to better manage their health issues. I would like to assist communities in topics such as diet, managing polypharmacy and making sure patients that are in need of home care are getting the proper assistance.

Many of the issues we have in healthcare today is due to the poor education we are giving our patients. There is a whole lot of patients that live alone, do not have the proper resources, and are not being well taught on how to better manage their disease processes. Therefore, I would like to assist my community and many others in this issue to improve the health care system we are currently living in. It is extremely important to give out the proper education to patients in order to make sure our work as health care providers is efficient and well done.

Family Nurse Practitioners play a key role in prevention and provide education to the communities and in the diagnose and treatments of many diseases. When I finish my career and become a Family Nurse Practitioner, I would like to apply my knowledges and skills working in Nephrology. I have been working for several years in dialysis and I have a great experience working with patients suffering from kidney disease. I think that together with the interdisciplinary team, such as nurses, doctors, dietitians, and social workers, I can play a vital role in improving the health and lives of my patients, educating them about how to deal with their disease, explaining everything about their treatment, the diet and lifestyle that they should follow. Also, I would like to work hard in the prevention of the kidney disease, educating the communities about the risk factors that can cause the disease, such as diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure. Kidney disease is considered one of the pandemics of this century.

I want to work in primary care because I want to work with individuals and families to test, diagnose and treat patients across all age ranges. I want to promote general health care, help prevent disease and facilitate the management of common, acute and chronic illnesses. Family nurse practitioners document and review patient and family health histories; perform physical examinations; diagnose and treat health issues; order and interpret labs, tests and x-ray results; have prescription knowledge and, in some states, prescription authority; encourage preventive health care measures; and refer patients to various specialists. Family nurse practitioners can work in many different settings, from hospitals and clinics to nursing homes and hospice care.
